The Regimental Records of the Queens (1) indicate that Albert Treadgold was born in Epsom and enlisted in Leatherhead.

The War Diary of the 6th Bn. confirms that they were in ARRAS and that between 5th and 11th March supplied working parties to the Royal Engineers, and that on the 8th "1 OR" was wounded. (2)

However on 12th March, the War Diary notes "enemy shelling of ARRAS. Send over 5.9s and 9.2s in vicinity of Grand Place. Shelling continued until  2 p.m.  2 men wounded."

There are two possibilities, maybe Albert Treadgold was injured on 8th March or even earlier, or he was one of the two men injured by shelling on the 12th. Over this distance in time it is not possible to say, unfortunately.

Albert is also named on War Memorials in Epsom (see below).
His story is also told, including a photo of his headstone, on the Epsom & Ewell Explorer website.

His life

Albert John Treadgold was born on 15 April 1886 and was baptised at Christ Church, Epsom Common on 30 May 1886. In the 1911 Census he was a Domestic Gardener.

His father was John Treadgold, a son of Joseph and Sarah Treadgold: his mother was Eliza Knight a daughter of Ambrose Knight and Mary Bullard. John was a Bricklayer.

John and Eliza were married at Epsom Parish Church on 11 March 1883. Albert's siblings were Ada Mary b abt 1884 and Charles Ambrose b 1891.

Albert married Nellie Louisa Reynolds at Christ Church, Epsom Common on 2 August 1913.

Nellie was born in Bangalore, Karnataka, India in about 1888. She was a daughter of Sergeant John Reynolds of the 4th Oxford Light Infantry and his wife Elizabeth.

Albert and Nellie had two children, both born in Epsom - John Albert b 1915 and Nellie Elizabeth b 1917.

Albert lived at:

1891 Census: The Folly, South St, Epsom
1901 & 1911 Census: 5 The Folly, South St, Epsom

He married in 1913. In the 1918 Electoral Register his widow Nellie was at 4 Pretoria Cottages, Kingston Road, Leatherhead. Possibly that is where they lived after getting married, presumably because he might have found employment in Leatherhead rather than in Epsom.

After the war

His father, John, died on 23 April 1918, Reigate, Surrey. His mother, Eliza, died at the age of 94 in 1953 (Surrey Mid eastern District, July 1953).

According to the Electoral Registers Nellie lived on at 4 Pretoria Cottages until 1922.
From 1923 to 1926 she was at 218 Kingston Road, Leatherhead, the address given for her in the CWGC record.
From 1927 to at least 1931 she was at 4 Waterloo Cottages, off Church Street, Leatherhead

Nellie married Leonard Small, a widower, on 6 February 1932 at St. Martin of Tours, Epsom.

By the time of the England & Wales Register in 1939 she was again a widow and her son John was living with her:

5 Clinton Road Leatherhead
Nellie L Small - b 29 Aug 1887 - Widow - Unpaid Domestic Duties
John A Treadgold - b 15 Feb 1915 - Single - Electrical Trained Asst: ARP Duties

Her death was registered in Surrey in March 1976. She was buried in Leatherhead Parish Churchyard:
