Good
Wishes Mrs
Margaret Bumham, who has been School Librarian
for the past 14 years, is retiring at the end of term. She
has seen many changes in that time and leaves the school
with a thriving, much-used Resource Centre. We thank her
for her vision and hard work and wish her well as she sets
up as a consultant in library and information work.

Music
News The time leading up
to Easter has been particularly busy with three major
events taking place. Students in GCSE Music classes
presented an Ensemble Performance Evening which proved so
popular that it was 'standing room only' in the New Dining
Hall venue.
Parents, friends and past students enjoyed a varied and
entertaining programme that included two rock bands, a
cello/trombone duet, a keyboard ensemble, a baroque
quartet and two jazz ensembles. The evening provided a
fitting setting for all the hard work and ambition of
staff and students.
Next, the Year Seven Band and Main Orchestra put on a
special concert for Stamford Green School at Epsom as part
of the primary school's Music Week. The audience of more
than 500 youngsters aged ten and younger greatly enjoyed
the concert and kept everyone on their toes by asking
plenty of questions. This was Year Seven Band's first
public performance and they, together with the more
experienced Main Orchestra, were warmly congratulated on
their performance.
PLEASE NOTE - Tonight's Spring Concert will commence at
8.00 pm. - Refreshments from 7.30 pm.

Thinking
Politics A visit from
Lembit Opik, Lib-Dem MP and the party's spokes-person for
Youth Affairs, proved to be inspirational for Sixth Form
students of History and Politics. He quickly established a
rapport with the students, infecting them with his
enthusiasm and dedication for Politics. He touched on many
topics of today and encouraged students to ask questions,
debate and then think about, not only their own views, but
those put forward by others.
Some of the exchanges are likely to be featured in the New
Statesman as a journalist from that magazine sat in
on the session. Students were also impressed when Mr Opik
received a call and had to hurry away to appear on
lunchtime TV news - he was already booked to talk about
Northern Ireland on Radio 4!

Challenge World
Challenge has been taken up by 36 students in current
Years 10, 11 and 12. Led by Miss Nicholls,
PE teacher, they plan to spend four weeks in July-August
2003 in Northern Territory, Australia engaged mainly on
conservation work but also testing themselves with some
trekking through the region's spectacular countryside.
Part of the challenge is to raise the £3,000 each
individual needs to take part and Miss Nicholls would
welcome any ideas for group projects which would help to
raise some of the money - car washing, packing shopping at
a local supermarket and a disco for Year 7s are three
initiatives already embarked upon.

'New
Look' Macbeth The Tinderbox
Theatre Company offered Year 9 students a new
approach to Macbeth when they presented key
scenes from the play to a fascinated audience. Macbeth was
transformed into a gun toting cowboy, while Lady Macbeth
delivered her lines as a nightclub singer! This
unconventional approach proved popular as the programme
lasting about four hours kept the audience fully
entertained!
Students also had the opportunity to take part and many
surprised their friends and themselves by the sensitivity
of their acting. It was an event which certainly enhanced
students' understanding of the play as well as being
entertaining and fun!

Writing
Rewarded Sixth Former Nick
Lambon has had an article accepted for
publication in Emagazine, a publication for A
level English students. As he has ambitions to be a
journalist he was delighted to receive news of acceptance
and even more pleased when he received a payment of £50.
His article was about 'School Sport' - something with
which Nick is not in complete agreement but he hopes he
managed to put his opinions across in a jokey manner! His
interest in writing is long standing and he is now Editor
of the School Magazine, The Green Bottle for
which he has been a regular contributor.

students who came as partners for our Years 9, 10 and 12

sitting in on lessons for a day and joining in the Karaoke
evening.

Sporting
Round-up Football:
Congratulations to Sixth Formers Alex Ball,
Philip Rippin and Stuart Wallace
who have been involved with Surrey's U19 football squad
this season. They have now been selected to represent
Surrey at the annual English Schools Festival of Football.
Steven Douglas and Antoine
Thompson, both in Year 10, are also Surrey
regulars while Sean Coppack, Year 9, is
in Fulham's Youth squad and James Montgomery,
Year 7, trains with Reading youth squad.
A full programme of football has been played this winter
with each team playing between 15 and 20 games. The Year
10s were the most successful, winning their league.
Cross Country: We have upheld our strong
tradition in cross country and at the Surrey Championships
at Banstead last Saturday were again top school: the Year
7 girls and Year 8 boys won their events with Year 7 boys
coming third. Nine Therfield runners have been picked for
the Surrey team against Hampshire this weekend.
Rugby has been a success story in terms
of interest, with well over 35 boys regularly attending
training after school. The Year 8s started the year by
winning the Cobham 10s tournament and have wins over
Howard of Effingham, Ashcombe and Blenheim this year.
The Year 9/10s have improved as the year has progressed
and, together with a combined Year 7/8 team, celebrated
excellent wins over Howard last week. Tim Holton,
Year 9, has played for the Surrey Development squad and
the SE Rugby League team.
Thanks should go to the many parents who have helped with
transport, many of the games would not have taken place
without this help.
Early season coaching by players from London Towers helped
our Basketball teams who have competed
strongly in the district leagues.
Hockey is proving increasingly popular -
especially with boys - and we are now able to run girls,
boys and mixed teams.
In Netball, all years have taken part in
tournaments, league and friendly fixtures. Gymnastics
attracts a dedicated band of followers who are finding
that taking part in the Surrey Schools competitions keeps
them sharp and provides an extra incentive to put in the
time this demanding sport requires to succeed.
Julie Hunt (Year 11) and Joe
Bennett (Year 9) were both selected to swim
for Surrey against Kent in an intercounties event earlier
this month.
James Lloyd, Year 11, enjoyed an exacting and successful
three days representing Surrey in the U18 Inter-County tennis
championships. As Surrey is in Div 1 it meant tough
opposition but the team won all three ties. James, whose
uncles David and John were leading players for Britain
over a number of years, was the only Surrey player to play
six rubbers and win all six! Not surprisingly, he has
ambitions to follow a career in tennis.
