Useful reminders

FROM THE HEAD TEACHER

Good Wishes Mrs Margaret Bumham, who has been School Librarian for the past 14 years, is retiring at the end of term. She has seen many changes in that time and leaves the school with a thriving, much-used Resource Centre. We thank her for her vision and hard work and wish her well as she sets up as a consultant in library and information work.

Staff Vacancies We are looking to appoint an ICT Technician (full time) and a Science Technician (part time). More details from Mrs Barbara Howarth on 01372 814429. Please hurry as closing dates are near.

Looking Ahead Our Higher Education Evening which gives valuable information about application to university will be held on 24th April at 7pm. A representative from a local university, students who have gone through the process and members of staff will be speaking and there will be time for questions.

Music News The time leading up to Easter has been particularly busy with three major events taking place. Students in GCSE Music classes presented an Ensemble Performance Evening which proved so popular that it was 'standing room only' in the New Dining Hall venue.

Parents, friends and past students enjoyed a varied and entertaining programme that included two rock bands, a cello/trombone duet, a keyboard ensemble, a baroque quartet and two jazz ensembles. The evening provided a fitting setting for all the hard work and ambition of staff and students.

Next, the Year Seven Band and Main Orchestra put on a special concert for Stamford Green School at Epsom as part of the primary school's Music Week. The audience of more than 500 youngsters aged ten and younger greatly enjoyed the concert and kept everyone on their toes by asking plenty of questions. This was Year Seven Band's first public performance and they, together with the more experienced Main Orchestra, were warmly congratulated on their performance.

PLEASE NOTE - Tonight's Spring Concert will commence at 8.00 pm. - Refreshments from 7.30 pm.

After Your Money! Parents of Sixth Formers may find their sons/daughter exceptionally helpful just now for they seriously need your support! April 17-19 are the Rag Days this year when a 'break out' will be held, plus an evening 'event' for parents and students. On the 18th they will be out on the streets of Epsom and Leatherhead rattling their collecting boxes. Designated charities this year are Save the Children and the Royal Marsden Cancer charities.

Thinking Politics A visit from Lembit Opik, Lib-Dem MP and the party's spokes-person for Youth Affairs, proved to be inspirational for Sixth Form students of History and Politics. He quickly established a rapport with the students, infecting them with his enthusiasm and dedication for Politics. He touched on many topics of today and encouraged students to ask questions, debate and then think about, not only their own views, but those put forward by others.

Some of the exchanges are likely to be featured in the New Statesman as a journalist from that magazine sat in on the session. Students were also impressed when Mr Opik received a call and had to hurry away to appear on lunchtime TV news - he was already booked to talk about Northern Ireland on Radio 4!

World Challenge World Challenge has been taken up by 36 students in current Years 10, 11 and 12. Led by Miss Nicholls, PE teacher, they plan to spend four weeks in July-August 2003 in Northern Territory, Australia engaged mainly on conservation work but also testing themselves with some trekking through the region's spectacular countryside.

Part of the challenge is to raise the £3,000 each individual needs to take part and Miss Nicholls would welcome any ideas for group projects which would help to raise some of the money - car washing, packing shopping at a local supermarket and a disco for Year 7s are three initiatives already embarked upon.

'New Look' Macbeth The Tinderbox Theatre Company offered Year 9 students a new approach to Macbeth when they presented key scenes from the play to a fascinated audience. Macbeth was transformed into a gun toting cowboy, while Lady Macbeth delivered her lines as a nightclub singer! This unconventional approach proved popular as the programme lasting about four hours kept the audience fully entertained!

Students also had the opportunity to take part and many surprised their friends and themselves by the sensitivity of their acting. It was an event which certainly enhanced students' understanding of the play as well as being entertaining and fun!

Prayer Group The first meeting of the Summer term will be on Monday, 29th April at 8 pm in the school. All parents are welcome or you can request a prayer to be said. Mrs Jill Poole (01 932 865476) will be happy to give more information.

Writing Rewarded Sixth Former Nick Lambon has had an article accepted for publication in Emagazine, a publication for A level English students. As he has ambitions to be a journalist he was delighted to receive news of acceptance and even more pleased when he received a payment of £50.

His article was about 'School Sport' - something with which Nick is not in complete agreement but he hopes he managed to put his opinions across in a jokey manner! His interest in writing is long standing and he is now Editor of the School Magazine, The Green Bottle for which he has been a regular contributor.

This is a popular addition to our extra-curricular activities and twenty Year 9 students have enrolled for the Bronze Award. They have begun working towards their Skill, Service and Physical Recreation sections and hope to do some work with the local Fire Brigade for their service awards. Miss Kendrick is the unit leader, with help from Mr Sadikali, Miss Boxall, Mr Hostler and Mr Pordage.

A team-building adventure weekend is planned for next term plus expeditions to qualify for the bronze award. It is hoped to expand the programme still further next year and embark on the Silver Award as well.

Dates to Note April 10th is Year 7 Parents' Evening and school will close at 3.15 that day.
April 17th is an INSET Day when students are not in school.
Year 10 study leave starts on Thursday, 25th April.
Examination week is 29th April-3rd May.

Exchange Programme The 41 German students who came as partners for our Years 9, 10 and 12 linguists had their worst fears about our weather confirmed last week. Even so, they had a good time and enjoyed visits to Oxford, London and Brighton as well as sitting in on lessons for a day and joining in the Karaoke evening.

Collecting Challenge We have been issued with a challenge by Books for Schools organisers - if we can collect 6,900 tokens from newspapers and crisp packets by 15th April, an extra 500 tokens will be donated. As 500 tokens equals ten books, our collectors are very keen to meet the challenge, so please remember over the Easter holidays, keep the tokens and send in before the 15th!

Immunisation Programme Year 9 students have been given forms for Diptheria, Tetanus and Polio injections these must be returned promptly if you want your son/ daughter to receive the immunisation at school.

World Book Day Students received a £1 book token to mark the occasion and a pleasing number attended and took part in a 'favourite piece' reading in the Resource Centre. Staff and students gathered at lunch time to read a paragraph from their favourite book and explain why it meant so much to them.

Messages We cannot interrupt lessons to deliver forgotten PE kits or other items. Please tell your son/ daughter that they can come to the Office to see if a kind person from home has brought in any forgotten items.

Surrey Youth Games These will take place on 8th and 9th June. Mole Valley will, once again, be entering a team. More details from 01306 879194.

Sporting Round-up Football: Congratulations to Sixth Formers Alex Ball, Philip Rippin and Stuart Wallace who have been involved with Surrey's U19 football squad this season. They have now been selected to represent Surrey at the annual English Schools Festival of Football.

Steven Douglas and Antoine Thompson, both in Year 10, are also Surrey regulars while Sean Coppack, Year 9, is in Fulham's Youth squad and James Montgomery, Year 7, trains with Reading youth squad.

A full programme of football has been played this winter with each team playing between 15 and 20 games. The Year 10s were the most successful, winning their league.

Cross Country: We have upheld our strong tradition in cross country and at the Surrey Championships at Banstead last Saturday were again top school: the Year 7 girls and Year 8 boys won their events with Year 7 boys coming third. Nine Therfield runners have been picked for the Surrey team against Hampshire this weekend.

Rugby has been a success story in terms of interest, with well over 35 boys regularly attending training after school. The Year 8s started the year by winning the Cobham 10s tournament and have wins over Howard of Effingham, Ashcombe and Blenheim this year.

The Year 9/10s have improved as the year has progressed and, together with a combined Year 7/8 team, celebrated excellent wins over Howard last week. Tim Holton, Year 9, has played for the Surrey Development squad and the SE Rugby League team.

Thanks should go to the many parents who have helped with transport, many of the games would not have taken place without this help.

Early season coaching by players from London Towers helped our Basketball teams who have competed strongly in the district leagues.

Hockey is proving increasingly popular - especially with boys - and we are now able to run girls, boys and mixed teams.

In Netball, all years have taken part in tournaments, league and friendly fixtures. Gymnastics attracts a dedicated band of followers who are finding that taking part in the Surrey Schools competitions keeps them sharp and provides an extra incentive to put in the time this demanding sport requires to succeed.

Julie Hunt (Year 11) and Joe Bennett (Year 9) were both selected to swim for Surrey against Kent in an intercounties event earlier this month.

James Lloyd, Year 11, enjoyed an exacting and successful three days representing Surrey in the U18 Inter-County tennis championships. As Surrey is in Div 1 it meant tough opposition but the team won all three ties. James, whose uncles David and John were leading players for Britain over a number of years, was the only Surrey player to play six rubbers and win all six! Not surprisingly, he has ambitions to follow a career in tennis.

Marathon Runners Mr Garner and Miss Mulroy will be running in the London Marathon on April 14th. Their chosen charities are the Leonard Cheshire Foundation and Cancer Care - both will be delighted to receive sponsorship from parents or students.

Thank You Mr Ben Langford and Mr Sadikali successfully completed their abseiling adventures at Twickenham and thank all those who contributed to the £270 they raised for Cancer Research UK.
