Therfield School Leatherhead - Proposal for changes to the school uniform

We would like to propose a change to an open necked, shaped shirt for girls. The demand for such a shirt follows consultation with both staff and the students school council. Girls would no longer have to wear or purchase a tie, the regulation shirt could be worn loose and would not need to be tucked into the trouser or skirt. The aim being to improve the image of our students and make the shirt more comfortable to wear. The new shirt would be 'shaped' rather that fitted so not worn tight, with a flat open necked collar, long sleeves and no tie.

The options include the following:

  • A white shaped shirt supplied by Lester Bowden with a Therfield Logo embroidered to the collar at a cost of between £9.50-£11.50
  • An open necked, shaped shirt with green pin stripes supplied by Lester Bowden but with no logo at a cost of between £11-£13.50
  • A black and red pin striped shirt supplied by Lester Bowden but with no logo at a cost of between £11-£13.50

With all of the above, there would no longer be a need to purchase the tie which is currently sold at £4.25.

Colours ties for awards such as Sport and Music would need to be replaced, as it is not possible to combine an open necked shirt with a tie. We could introduce either a pin on badge or iron on badge for the blazer in place of the colours tie for girls.

The new shirt could be compulsory for all Year 7 girls as from September 2006 and could be phased in over a 5 year period with other girls in other year groups retaining the current uniform i.e. white shirt and tie. Alternatively, the new shirt could be compulsory for all new Year 7s and optional for all girls in other Year groups as from September 2006. it must be stressed however, that should we choose this option only the new regulation shirt will be permitted. Girls would not be able to wear any fitted shirt without a tie.

We would appreciate your comments on the above and would be grateful if you could return the slip below to your son/daughter's tutor by Thursday 4th May.
