THERFIELD SCHOOL
HEADMASTER'S NEWSLETTER
Easter 1987

Dear Parents

As Easter approaches, this letter is to bring you up to date with the significant news and achievements of the last term and to give details of some forthcoming events.

STAFF CHANGES
I am delighted to announce that Mr. Steffan James (Head of Modern Languages) has been appointed Deputy Head of Brookfield School, near Southampton. Therfield will of course miss him very much but this is a well deserved promotion.

We are also going to say farewell to Mrs. EagIen, our Pottery teacher, who will be moving away to Wales in the near future.

Mrs. Burgess, the school Admin Officer, will also be moving on from mid-April.

We wish all of them every happiness in the future.

PARENTS' EVENINGS
During the last term we have been delighted to welcome nearly all the parents into school as each year has had its parents' evenings. In some cases, some parents with children in a number of year groups must have felt that they were living here! We are enormously encouraged by the degree of interest and support shown by parents. In order to ensure that the school is responsive to parental wishes, I draw your attention to the attached note on parents' evenings and invite you to complete and send in the attached questionnaire.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS
Presentation Evening

The school was honoured on 23rd January to welcome the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Baker, Secretary of State for Education and Science, as principal guest at Presentation Evening. All pupils who had gained examination certificates could have them presented, and special awards were given for effort, service and achievement.

Mr. Baker kindly donated one of his personal computers to the school to mark his visit.

Great Egg Race
Frazer-Nash sponsored another Great Egg Race for 3rd/4th Year pupils. Using engineering principles and simple materials like card and sellotape, teams of youngsters had to design and make a vehicle which would travel furthest when released down a slope.

Spring Concert
Over 200 parents attended a concert put on by the Music department. It was a delightful evening and revealed yet again the huge reservoir of talent amongst Therfield pupils. The Swing Band is auditioning for the National Festival of Music for Youth. If they are successful, they will be performing in the Albert Hall in the Autumn.

VISITS
1) All 2nd Form pupils have visited the Natural History Museum in London.
2) As part of Industry Year and to help inform pupils prior to options choices, all 3rd Form pupils have visited a local industrial establishment.
3) 46 pupils went on the Alpine Village Project.
4) A party of Sixth Formers and staff visited Russia at Christmas. Many other class and club visits have happened as well.

PUPIL ACHIEVEMENTS
There have been three exceptional achievements by pupils notified to me.

1) Alex Bennett has been selected to play Badminton for an England Youth Team.
2) Lee Harlow will be going to Australia as one of a small group of British Scouts to the next World Jamboree.
3) Anna Rimington and Stuart Atkinson in the Sixth Form have won first prize in the Sunday Telegraph 'City Essay' competition. They will get their awards at a special dinner in the City and as part of their prize the school will receive £25 awards for Economics students for the next ten years.

I would also like to record that pupils at the school have raised £1,867 for various charities since September 1986. This is a superb achievement.

BUILDING DEVELOPMENTS
1) New fencing has been erected near the front entrance which will. improve the quality of the environment.
2) Part of the new wing has been re-roofed following serious leaks.
3) The new music room will be built in the near future and should be ready by the middle of the Summer term.
4) I have also been informed that agreement has been given to convert some underused cloakroom space to allow Therfield to became a County Music Centre. This would mean a lot of individual music tuition being carried out here after school and will provide practice rooms which will be available to us during the day.

REQUESTS FOR HELP
If any parent knows where the school could obtain a cheap Ansaphone, also a free or cheap second-hand microwave oven, I would be very grateful to hear from them. I am also looking for any local firm that might be willing to help sponsor equipment to be placed in a new model office being set up as part of the new Certificate of Pre-Vocational Education Course.
