Dear Parents

I am writing to you to bring you up to date with some school news and to invite you to contribute to the voluntary school fund.

EXAM RESULTS
Yet again the pupils at Therfield have gained quite exceptional examination successes. Of the 241 pupils in the Fifth year 38% have gained 5 or more 'O' Level pass grades. (The national % figure is approximately 20.) 68% have gained one or more '0' Level pass grades.

At 'A' Level, 74 pupils were entered for 211 separate subject entries and an 80% pass rate was achieved.

A full set of results will be sent to you prior to the next annual meeting for parents organised by the Governors.

TO PARENTS OF SECOND FORM PUPILS
Some parents of pupils in the 2nd Form have asked for guidance on 2nd Form setting in this, our first year's operation of the new arrangements.

When pupils join us, provisional groupings are established for each subject. As the year proceeds,of course, the flexibility of the new system will allow changes in setting to be made when necessary.

As you might expect, some changes are likely to take place towards the end of this term, now that pupils have begun to settle in and following formal assessments in November. Details of your son or daughter's set allocation will be sent home with reports in December.

VOLUNTARY SCHOOL FUND
May I ask you to make a contribution to this fund. The fund provides a source of money to supplement the County's annual Capitation Grant and which can be used to improve facilities for pupils. The main ways in which this fund is used are as follows: Support for School Clubs and Societies (now numbering more than40).
Support for House activities.
Environmental improvement and facilities for displaying pupils' work.
Awards for effort, service and attainment.
The purchase of extra items of equipment.
Subsidy to the school pay-phone.
Christmas decorations.

We ask for no specific amount (I know of other schools in Surrey which have asked for amounts up to £25.) We know that individual circumstances vary, that some families already give to the Friends' Covenant Scheme, and that others have a number of children in the school. If you are able to help us will you please put your contribution into the envelope and return it to your son/daughter's tutor. This system is entirely anonymous unless you require a receipt which we will gladly give. If for whatever reason you will not be making a contribution IT IS ESSENTIAL that the envelope is returned to your son/daughter's tutor. This is the only means we have of ensuring that no contributions go astray.

I know from the response of parents last year to the School Fund that many of you will respond generously and I thank you in advance for your help. Full audited accounts of the Fund will be available at the Governors' Annual Meeting for parents.
