THERFIELD SCHOOL
NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS
June 1980

END OF YEAR EXAMINATIONS
These are being held on June 27th, 30th and July 1st and 2nd. The school day is being re-organized into three 1½ hour sessions over this period. The lunch break will be from 12.40 - 1.40 p.m. In order to develop good study practices, most revision will need to be done at home in pupils' own time but there may be additional time for revision in school between examinations - mainly in the middle session of the day.

For this examination period only, the final bell will be at 3.25 p.m. daily. You are requested not to arrange family holidays on these dates unless unavoidable.

AUDITOR
We appeal for an auditor who will be kind enough to give an hour or two each term to audit the School Fund. For some years we have much appreciated the help given by Mr. Dunkley but he is unable to continue. Please let the Headmaster or Aministration Officer know if you are able to help us.

HOLIDAY
The Governors have granted the two occasional holidays on 3rd and 4th July (sinilar to last year) after the main school examinations.

VISITS WEEK
Outdoor activities and visits away from school are being concentrated in the week beginning Monday, 14th July, the penultimate week of the term. These will include visits to France, Woburn Abbey, London Museum, Tate Gallery, Surrey Schools Sailing Regatta, together with geographical and biological field studies. Pupils concerned will be notified in due course.

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
There is a vacancy arising for a laboratory technician to assist in the Science department. This is a part-time post for up to 18 hours weekly and term-time only plus 10 days in school holidays. If you have (O) levels or equivalent and are interested in this work please inform the headmaster or Mr. Jones, Head of Scicnce.

NEEDLEWORK
Miss Ford will welcome any remnants of material lengths. They may be of little value to you but could be very helpful for instructional purposes. These may be left at the school office.

CLOTHING
We all benefit from the positive image created by the good appearance of our pupils, both in and travelling to and from school. This year, we have had strong support from parents in almost eliminating multi-coloured lumber jackets and fashion coats. We would further ask that you do not send children to school wearing cord trousers or plimsolls and trainers.

SALE OF SCHOOL CLOTHING
We have had many enquiries from parents, including those whose children will be joining us from the middle schools, for any items of uniform no longer required by pupils.

The Friends are hoping to arrange regular sales of uniform at the school with the first to be held on July 9th when there will be a meeting for parents of middle school pupils joining in September, and would be very glad to receive any contributions you may have as soon as possible. Items in good condition, including P.E. kits, cleaned and ready for sale, may be handed in to the school office. Please enclose an envelope with the following details clearly marked; your child's name, registration group, description of article, price required, date sent in. (This will be used to return money received to you). 25% of the sale price will be given to the School Fund and 75% returned to the seller. If you have any queries regarding the scheme, Mrs. Sharkey in the school office - 77661.

EXAMINATION CLINIC
The results of external examinations (C.S.E., G.C.A., etc.) will be published mid-August. As in previous years, the school will open on the morning of Friday, 29th August from 8.30 a.m. until 12.30 in order to give advice to students and parents on matters arising from these results, and on their sixth form courses.

SUMMER MUSICAL CONCERT
Attached is a notice about our evening of music, dancing and barbecue supper on Friday, 11th July. Please help us by booking as early as possible.

SCHOOL FUND
The need to subsidise the taxing and insurance of the minibus has made inroads into our school fund this year. There have been large numbers of school activities and clubs which we are glad to support, but we have overstretched ourselves financially. We hope that you will generously support the fund when we appeal for donations in September.

AUTUMN MUSICAL SHOW
After the success of "Oliver", the three performances of "Fiddler on the Roof" were fully booked two weeks ahead of the show. Mark your diaries for the 13th, 14th and15th November and make sure that you enjoy the sparkling nostalgia of the next production, "THE BOY FRIEND". The box office will open about four weeks ahead of performances.

GIRLS' GYMNASTIC DISPLAY
This will take Place 7.00 - 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 18th June. I have to tell you that all seats have now been taken.

NEW PARENTS' EVENING
This will take place 7.00-8.30 p.m. Wednesday, 9th July.

SNACK BAR SERVICE
The cash bar service was started on Monday, 9th June. This is available in addition to the traditional school dinner and appears to be popular with the pupils.

ATHLETIC SPORTS
This meeting will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, 23rd July, weather permitting.

SAILING
Mr. Stewart is arranging next year's sailing holiday from 20th to 26th April 1981.

In the recent Surrey Schools Sailing Association regatta, the Fast Fleet Trophy was won by Chris Trotter and Nicholas Jefferies and the Mirror Trophy by Paul Stapleton and Anna Sharpe. This exciting sport has a strong following at Therfield

NEW BUILDINGS
The now Advanced Science Centre and Sports Hall are both in regular use. Should any parents be interested in seeing over these, we have made the following arrangements,
2.30 on Monday, July 7th.

This should give time for you to see both new buildings and have a cup of tea with us before the end of afternoon school. If you hope to come, will you let the school office know as soon as possible.

FRIENDS OF THERFIELD
The Friends have undertaken to help the school with improved reprographic equipment over the next two years. A plain paper copier is already proving most useful in producing high quality copies of educational material for teachers' use. We hope that you will give the utmost support to the Friends fund-raising programme.

LADIES MOVEMENT GROUP
This "keep-trim" group for parents and friends meets on Friday afternoon at 4.30 p.m. in the new Sports Hall. You are welcome to join the group at any time.

Finally, you will be receiving the usual information for the next school session through the Year Letters.

On behalf of the staff, I thank all parents for their support and interest during the current year.
