HEADTEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
May 1990

Dear Parents

In the Autumn parents were consulted about the nature of the school day at Therfield. At that time the school was considering a 'continental' style day. The result of the consultation was that the Governors did not feel there was sufficient support to warrant going ahead.

The Governors have considered other ways of structuring the day and have now decided that from next September the school will work a longer morning and a shorter afternoon. This will mean that the lunchbreak will be later. The exact details of the day are given below.

This information is especially important for those parents who wish their sons/daughter to go home to lunch.

The main reason for the change is to make better use of the time before lunch when it seems that most pupils are able to work at their best. The period after lunch never seems quite so effective.

CHANGE OF DATE
The teachers' training day arranged for TUESDAY 26th JUNE will now take place on FRIDAY 22nd JUNE as the Inspectors who will be leading the day have had to change their schedules. If there are any problems regarding this change of date, the school will make arrangements to supervise any students where parents are not able to ensure proper supervision.

This change means that the only pupils required to attend school on Friday are those who have GCSE or A Level exams on that day.

All pupils will be required in school on TUESDAY 26th June.

BEEF IN SCHOOL MEALS
Given the concern over Bovine Spongiforn Encephalopathy in beef, the County authorities have taken the following decisions.
They believe that the best scientific and medical advice indicates that there is no risk to public health from consuming beef. Beef will therefore continue to feature on the menu. However, given the concern, alternative meals will always be available and all meat items will be clearly labelled to enable pupils and staff to make their own decision whether or not to consume a beef meal.

HELP REQUESTED
The school has been approached to see if there is anyone who would be willing to take an Oxford University undergraduate as a paying guest for 9 weeks from mid-June. This young man has a vacation work placement with the Logica Computer Company. He is 21 year old and described as 'quiet'. If you are interested, please contact the school office.
