THERFIELD SCHOOL
HEADTEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
April 1992

Dear parents

As I write this, Election Day looms and I am aware that you will receive this on the day itself. The result of this election will have enormous effects upon the future direction of secondary education in this country.

TECHNOLOGY AWARD
The most important event since half term has been the news that Therfield has been selected by the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Tim Eggar, as one of only 62 schools in the country for a special grant of £238,000. This is in recognition of the quality of education given in Technology, and the grant is to enable even better work to be done, so that we become an even brighter 'beacon of excellence'. This will in no way change our commitment to delivering a broad and balanced education, but will allow us to make the technological component even better.

STAFF CHANGES
Mr. Cockroft will be leaving us at Easter and will be replaced by Mrs. McCabe who rejoins us following maternity leave. We are much looking forward to welcoming our new Deputy Head, Mr. Geary.

OTHER NEWS
It has been an exciting half term, with our own school mock election featuring a great deal. All the Parliamentary candidates have been into school and met with the pupil candidates and their supporters. Mr. Baker, the Home Secretary, took part in a very lively question and answer session with the Sixth Form.

The election result was a win for the Conservatives, with a very strong Liberal Democrat challenge. Our results came from a poll on 1st April. so that they could be fed into the John Craven's Newsround school election results service to which 4000 schools contributed.

There have been no further developments in the bid by Epsom Area Health Trust to buy some of Therfield's surplus playing fields

We are at present in the middle of our exchange with College Jean Monnet of Vertou in France. You may have heard that whilst travelling back from Brighton, the coach they were travelling in was involved in an accident; fortunately only minor bumps and bruises were sustained, and those involved are well on the way to recovery.

All pupils now arriving on bicycles have cycle helmets (with the exception of those leaving this summer). I would be grateful for your support in checking that helmets are worn as I have had one or two reports of helmets being put on only when close to school.

Other events this term have included charity presentations as a result of House events and promotions. A lot of hard work and enthusiasm on the part of pupils and staff resulted in cheques for £758 (Norbury House) going to the Cot Death Appeal, Royal Marsden Children's Unit £382 (Polesden), Leatherhead Night Hostel £352 (Juniper) and Rainbow Trust £310 (Leith).

A most successful Evening of Drama put on by our A Level and GCSE Theatre Studies students played to a packed house last Friday. The programme was a varied and exacting one, with excerpts, monologues and duologues from a range of writers plus some original work by the students themselves.

This half term, also saw the production of a school newspaper The Green Bottle which was largely the work of the lower school ably assisted by Mr. Holt, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Lacey. They are now hard at work on the second edition.

Three Year 9 pupils were regional winners in a national collage competition sponsored by the Woolwich Building Society. They had to design a city of the Year 2000 and their work is on view at the headquarters of the Royal Insitute of British Architects.

In the UK Schools Mathematical Challenge our Year 9 pupils achieved 10 gold awards, 13 silver and 4 bronze. A gold award represents the top six per cent of the entry which this year comprised 1,250 schools and 85,000 students.

Our sports teams and individuals continue to do well. Emma Veit was in the successful South Eastern team which won the schools gymnastic challenge cup for Surrey. David Hall has been selected to play for the County in the semi-finals of the National Schools Football Cup.

Our U15 XI won the District League Football Championships and have now been unbeaten by other schools for three years. Our U13 netball players also won the District Cup.

HELP NEEDED
The Friends Auction of Promises happens on May 9th. I have attached a list of those promises already offered. The Friends would be very grateful for some more. If you could help, please ring Jan Cheeseman (Ashtead) 272987. This is one way that we can raise money to improve directly the quality of the service we offer to our pupils. Please put the date in your diary - it is a first rate evening, and you may pick up a real bargain!

My very best wishes to you for a happy and peaceful Easter.

Yours sincerely
TJ Reddin
