FROM THE HEADTEACHER
The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) have informed us that Therfield will be inspected at some time in the Spring of 1995. I will give you more details closer to the time but hopefully we can use the experience to celebrate what we think of value and to develop the school still further. Parents may be aware that Glyn School at Ewell has revised its proposals to take a proportion of the intake on a selective basis and plan now, that half should be selected on the basis of an NFER non-verbal reasoning test, an aptitude test and an essay. This proposal has to be considered by the Secretary of State for Education and I hope local parents will make their views known to Glyn's Governors, particularly as Therfield attracts an increasing number of pupils from the Epsom area. As a matter of interest - in the DFE statistics for A Level compiled on last year's results, Glyn was shown to have an average points score of 12.7 from 69 candidates entered for 2 or more A levels and Therfield's points score was 17.8 from 85 candidates. At GCSE, Glyn had 48% of its 155 entry with 5 or more passes at A-C grades; Therfield's figures were 60% from 169 pupils. We need to erect some small wooden fences and invite any parents with skill - or just enthusiasm! - to a Working Party at 10.00 am on Saturday 9th July. SCHOOL UNIFORM : A Reminder that we have appointed Graham Andrews' School Wear Supplies'as sole supplier of the official school uniform and physical education kit. Certain items of uniform can only be purchased through the 'shops' that will operate at the school on set dates: Items can be ordered beforehand and collected on these dates. Diary: PUPIL ACHIEVEMENTS : Congratulations to Laura Bowdery in Year 10 who has been offered a place this summer with the National Youth Theatre. The competition for places each year is extremely high and only a small number of the 4,000+ youngsters who apply are successful. Laura is taking Drama at GCSE, was in the chorus of Therfield's production of South Pacific and one of the weird witches in Macbeth. The Environment Club has been chosen to receive an award from London Gatwick Environment Awards Scheme and Ms T. Smith with Club chairman, Edward Drewitt, Year 9, will be attending the awards ceremony on July 14th when the presentation will be made by John Craven, the TV personality. Edward submitted the Club's entry by detailing the many initiatives undertaken recently - his requests for help range from funds for a birdtable to a vacuum cleaner to help deal with litter! Exact amount of the award will be made known on July 14th. SPORT GENERAL NEWS : Parents of Year 7 pupils are invited to attend a spectacular AFRICA EVENING on July 8th from 7.00-8.30; this will be an evening of displays and activities presented by CDT, Music, Art and Drama departments with visitors and singers from the Africa Centre in London giving classes in mask making and African music. Some GCSE Art work will also be on display. Tomorrow - July 1st - is Fun Day with a Lunar Theme. The day's events, including the morning lessons, will mark the 25th anniversary of man's first landing on the moon. Mufti can be worn - 30p for late Sixties dress, House colours or Lunar costume and 50p for Fashion Victims (those who just have to wear designer gear) - and the canteen will be offering suitable food for 'Space Travellers'. Hopefully, Tutor Groups will run stalls and side shows and the afternoon will feature an Inter-House 'Race to the Moon'. Dave Cox is once again in charge. RIVER MOLE ACTION GROUP : This is the second year that Mole Valley District Council will run an education day about the health of the River Mole by observing the type of wild life that it can sustain. This year it will be held on Sunday, 3rd July. Miss Wood will be one of the Environmentalists teaching the public, but particularly the Lower Sixth A Level Biologists and members of the Environment Club, how to sample and examine the river life. Any other interested pupils or parents can meet at the Fetcham Splash, River Lane at 10.45 am with wellingtons. At 12.15 all the groups will make their way to Juniper Hall, Mickleham for a picnic lunch in the beautiful grounds there. The comparison of results and an exhibition of river life should mean that the event will finish at about 2pm SUN SEA & WORKSHEETS - Sets 3 & 4 in Year 10 Science had a lovely day on an Ecology Field Trip to the Seven Sisters Country Park at Seaford on 17th June. The detail of the life on a chalk grassland, the rare ecosystem of a salt marsh and the changing plants and animals that exist in rock pools between the tides were described and examined. The highlight of everybody's day was the fact that lunchtime coincided with a very low tide on the beach and the students were able to paddle and swim. An exhibition of the day's work is on display in the foyer of the new Science Block. CHOCOLATE TIME - A Year 10 Food Technology group recently spent a very wet Saturday visiting the Cadbury Experience at Bournville. There was little evidence however, of any dampness of pupils' appetites for free samples of chocolate. The true purpose of the trip was to help pupils understand more fully food processing on a commercial scale, but a very interesting day out and good bargain hunting in the factory shop added to Therfield's Cadbury Experience! TRAFFIC CALMING - Latest proposals for road safety in Cleeve Road involve the removal of the chicanes and replacing them with a 'traffic calming scheme'. A series of 'road tables' from Randalls Road to Kingston Road - each table would consist of a ramp to a 6m long plateau at a maximum height of 100mm - would be built. Other safety features such as mini-roundabouts at certain junctions are also being considered. If anyone has any thoughts about these proposals or would like to know more, contact Mark Bisson or Stuart Eastmond on 081-541-7724. SHOW NEWS - Therfield's major drama production has traditionally taken place in November. For this coming academic year, however, we are planning our major production for the Summer Term - sometime in July '95. It will be a 'Son et Lumière' style performance outdoors. Full details later.
