FROM THE HEAD TEACHER

Sign of Excellence On 21st June the Government announced that Therfield has been granted Beacon Status.

We are the only secondary school in Surrey to be so honoured in the present round of awards. Previously two other secondary schools in Surrey have been granted this much prized accolade. This is a great honour and recognises the excellent work that has been going on at Therfield.

In practice it means extra finance to enable us to work with other schools to share good practice. We have been teamed up with a school outside Brighton for special partnership, but will also be working with other local secondary schools, enabling us to pool the most effective and innovative ways of raising standards.

I could not be more pleased that Therfield has achieved this position at the point at which I retire. It is a great tribute to the hard work and commitment of so many teachers here over a considerable period of time.

School Day From next Monday (2nd July) we revert to normal timings for the school day - i.e. school starts at 8.30am and finishes at 3.30pm with lunch from 1.10-2.10.

Uniform Sales 3rd & 5th July Once again the Friends of Therfield will be holding a sale of second hand uniform and they need sellers as well as buyers!

The sale will be held between 3.00pm and 4.30pm in the Dining Hall on Tuesday, 3rd July. Any items for sale - clearly labelled with size, price, name and telephone number - should be brought to school as soon as possible. Uniform will be sold on a 50-50 basis and, of course, donations are very welcome. The Friends have sent home a letter setting out full details but if 'pupil post' failed you, then contact Sheena Reeves on 01 372 372531 for more information.

Uniform suppliers, Lester Bowden of Epsom, will be displaying and selling new uniform on 3rd July mainly for new Year 7s and on the 5th for present students, both times from 3.30 to 6.30pm.

Music News Next year Therfield will be starting an exciting new extra-curricular band and string programme for Year 7 students.

The aim of this programme will be to promote instrumental music making and give students the opportunity to try learning an instrument without the financial burden of its purchase and lesson fees.

More details on the way this programme is to run will be sent home at the start of next year. In the meantime, we are looking for second-hand instruments to purchase for use in these ensembles. Obviously the instruments need to be in good condition and we are interested in :

trumpets trombones tubas euphoniums
clarinets flutes bass clarinets violins
saxophones cellos violas double basses

Could anyone who has one of these instruments that they are willing to sell, contact Mr Ben Langford, Acting Head of Music.

Cabaret Evening now 16th July Please note a change of date. The date for this popular evening in the school's musical calendar is now Monday, 16th July. More information and ticket details are in the letter from the Music Department going home with this Newsletter.

Thank you to Paul Ex-Therfield pupil, Paul Belk achieved a personal best time and broke the British record when swimming for Great Britain in the Sydney Olympics. As a result, he qualified for a cash award from sponsors Kelloggs and was able to nominate Therfield to receive a similar amount.

Paul came into school on 7th June to present a cheque for £1021.41 and was quickly surrounded by a wide-eyed group of pupils, many of whom already knew of his successes and others who were impressed when told of them.

Mr Hill, who was head of PE, during Paul's time at Therfield recalled him as being an all-round sportsman who enthusiastically represented the school at a number of sports. Although already making a name for himself as a swimmer he never held back when playing other sports for his school. Paul is now a full-time swimmer having completed a degree in Materials Science at Bath University.

Therfield's other Olympic representative, tennis player Lorna Woodroffe, is now ranked sixth in Britain and will be playing in the singles and doubles at Wimbledon.

Fire Poet As part of Wordswork Mole Valley Literature Festival, the English department and Year 7 received a visit from Philip Wells, fire poet. He ran two workshops, inspiring pupils with his infectious energy and enthusiasm. As well as performing his own poems, he sparked their imaginations with talk of the 'hard beat box' words and gentle words mixed in the 'spin bin' to create original thought provoking images. His visit was voted a huge success as he cajoled pupils to write, meditate and perform their poems.

The plan is now to have a Therfield Poet Laureate to lead poetry writing and take part in next year's Mole Valley Literature Festival.

Diary date The Governors' annual meeting with parents will be held on Wednesday, 3rd October. As usual, this will be combined with the Friends of Therfield's AGM.

Summer wear Blazers need not be worn for the rest of this term; other jackets may not be worn as substitutes.

Congratulations Two pupils have gained success in national competitions this month.

14 year old Clare Smith has come fourth in the Creda Cookery Challenge and has won another cooker for the school, one for her family and a mountain bike for herself. The challenge to Year 9 cooks was issued by Creda earlier in the year and Clare ,successfully won through tough regional and semi final rounds before becoming one of nine finalists to compete at the Birmingham School of Cookery.

Also demonstrating good technology skills is Year 11 pupil Collins Ekere, who has become our eighth Arkwright Scholarship winner. Collins joined Therfield in Year 10 from his home country of Nigeria. He had never done any Design Technology work or studied Electronics but very quickly showed aptitude and was soon top of the class in all tests and mock examinations. Collins will be sponsored in his Sixth Form studies through the Arkwright Award and, to Mr de Little's delight, the school will also receive some funding.

Rag Week Result Fund raising activities during Sixth Form Rag Week raised a staggering amount of over £3000, of which £2,500 has been sent to the Macmillan Butterfly Cancer Relief Appeal and £800 to Tadworth Court Children's Home. 12 of our Sixth Formers also acted as stewards at the formal opening by Lord Ashley of Stoke of the Macmillan Cancer Centre at Epsom Hospital.

They received high praise from the organisers for their helpfulness. 'It was a pleasure meeting such a responsible and enthusiastic group of students' commented the Appeal organiser.

Project praise Mr Mayhew's Year 11 Geography students have been praised by Oxfam for their project work on the links between trade and aid. The group sent samples of their work to Oxfam and were complimented on their efforts which will be used by the charity in future displays. 'The leaflets not only showed artistic flair but a real depth of understanding of the links between trade and aid' was the comment.

Popular Exchange The eight day visit to Vertou in France for 22 Year 9 and 10 pupils plus three staff proved to be enjoyable and instructive. The pupils spent some time in lessons in the partner school and had day trips to St Malo and other places of interest including the very popular Futuroscope.

Asked to evaluate the experience, comments from the pupils proved very positive ranging from- 'I found the trip fantastic, a really excellent experience! I'm definitely going next year', 'The best part was meeting new people and learning things about them. It helped us a lot to become more confident and encouraged us to speak more French' to 'Futuroscope was brill!!' and 'I found the trip fantastic'.

Cake sale Mrs Hook's Year 8 Food Technology group successfully ran a cake sale as a mini project. This was an educational exercise but also raised money to buy new equipment for the kitchens. They organised a survey to find out the most popular cakes - no surprise that chocolate topped the list! - prepared posters to advertise the event and organised a conveyor belt assembly line to ice and decorate the cakes and recruited pupils to make extra goodies at home.

The aim was to raise £60 and so cash in on Mr Reddin's offer to put in another £15 if they reached this target. As one pupil commented as the total reached £63.29 - 'we did it. Sorry Sir!'

Thanks to Collectors We have reached 25,000 and still counting with the Tesco computer tokens and plan to send for four digital cameras and two printers.

The Learning Support Department collected around 8000 crisp tokens and have ordered a number of new books. The total is not quite as high as last year due to restrictions put in place by the organisers. We are immensely grateful to all who collected and ask you please to keep the Nestle tops coming in as this scheme is still running.

After School Club A club offering after school care for 24 children aged 5-11 is opening at the Bridge Community Centre, North Leatherhead in September. To be called Chipmunks, the club is now recruiting play/care workers willing to work term time from 3pm -6pm. The pay is £5 an hour - details from Abby Oatway 01306 879178.

Foster Carers Surrey's Social Services department is still seeking foster carers for children who are looked after by the County Council. In the past they have found that they have had a good response from parents who have children in secondary school so if you would like to know more, please telephone 020 8541 9600.

Parent Support Group A meeting is to be held tomorrow, 28th June, at Oxted School, Bluehouse Lane, Oxted, to give help and support to parents of children with ADHD. The meeting, which starts at 7.30pm, is organised by East Surrey ADHD Parent Support group.

Gardening Club We had a late start this year due to the very wet winter and the clay soil. However, thanks to the dedication of our very good friends from Leatherhead Horticultural Society, Tom Beams and Bert Seidel, we are up and running - despite broken arms and fingers depleting our numbers!

New members are always welcome - some digging still needs to be done and help with watering is always wanted. The garden now sports a beautiful new wooden seat donated by the Horticultural Society and this was officially handed over on Friday.

Lost property This is the last chance to reclaim lost items. We still get hundreds of unnamed garments handed in with no chance to re-route them to owners.

Athletics Challenge A highly competitive and enjoyable relay event was held at Therfield earlier in the month. Mixed teams from Therfield, Howard of Effingham, Blenheim and Ashcombe schools competed in a series of relay races involving all years and distances from 100 to 800 metres. The format meant that individuals were able to excel yet everyone ran for their team. It is nice to report that, for the second year running, Therfield came top in the overall rankings.

Sports Day - This year the weather was warm and fine and some excellent performances were recorded. Fuller report in the July Newsletter.

Congratulations - Emily Parker in Year 11 has been selected to represent Surrey in the Intermediate Girls' triple jump at the English Schools' Championships to be held at Exeter next month.

Special message from Mrs Hodgson As you know, Mr Reddin is retiring at the end of this term. A presentation will be made to him and if any parent or pupil wishes to contribute please send any donations to me at school.

School Uniform Lester Bowden of Epsom have now taken over as our uniform suppliers - their phone number is 01372 747475. A list setting out what is required can be obtained from school, but all uniform should now be purchased direct from the Epsom shop.

Mobile Phones (from News 86) It is recommended that students do not bring mobile phones in to school. Students should not need to use them during the day. Phones that are brought in may be damaged, lost or used inappropriately in lessons.

In some cases parents wish their son or daughter to have the phone with them in case of emergencies on the way to or from school. If this is the case, then the following points should be noted:

  • Phones must be switched off and put safely away before students enter lessons or tutor time

  • If a student's phone is seen or heard, for any reason, during lesson time it will be confiscated. It will then have to be collected from Head of Year at the end of the day.

  • A second offence will mean that the phone will have to be collected by a parent.

I am sure you appreciate how distracting and disruptive mobile phones can be if they are not switched off in lessons. Please encourage your son or daughter to use his/her phone sensibly.

BCG update (from News 88) Parents will be aware that the BCG immunisation programme that protects against Tuberculosis was suspended due to a national shortage of vaccine. The Department of Health has now said that the programme can be re-started. As there is a backlog of several years among school pupils, the local Health Authority has announced that it will begin to phase in the programme in the Autumn term:
  • current Years 10 and 9 will be immunised next September (2001)
  • current Years 8 and 7 in September 2002.
  • consent forms will be sent home the preceding July.
