THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.8, May 1994

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Initial plans for Therfield's new buildings include a new hall/creative arts space above the Dining Hall, a covered walkway around the two sides of the grass courtyard in the centre of the school and a new teaching block of five rooms plus changing rooms on the present Year 9 playground, linked to the I.T. corridor by a bridge. The problem is that the costs are £200,000 over budget and County are going to have to decide that if they want us to take the extra pupils, they will have to find the extra money!

SCHOOL UNIFORM : We have appointed Graham Andrews' School Wear Supplies as sole supplier of the official school uniform and physical education kit. Certain items of uniform can only be purchased through the 'shops' that will operate at the school on set dates.

Also to parents of Y7 and Y8 pupils - the Friends of the School plan to organise a second-hand uniform 'shop', but they need to know what items of clothing will be available to sell. You should have had a letter via your son/daughter setting out details about this - and Mrs. Hodgson needs to know about clothing for sale by June 8th.

Uniform Sale Dates for Your Diary:
7th July 5-9 pm Shop for new Y7
15th July 5-9 pm Shop for all Years
24th Aug 2-4 pm Shop - final collection

Cricket fixtures have been hit by the weather but not before the Year 10 XI had a good win over Glyn in the League but lost to Wallington in the Cup. Stuart Burnell has been picked for the Surrey U15 squad.

GENERAL NEWS

Parents of Year 7 pupils are invited to attend AFRICA EVENING on July 8th from 7.00-8.30; this will be
evening of displays and activities presented by CDT, Music, Art and Drama departments.

Our German Exchange guests returned home an Saturday after an enjoyable week. One or two were unimpressed with the triumphant display of wealth at 'Prinny's Palace' in Brighton and were more impressed with Windsor Castle - particularly as some of them thought it had been burnt to the ground!

Watching the Cup Final and a visit to Box Hill also proved popular. Thursday's disco was a high spot thanks to the excellent music and lightshow provided by Sixth Formers Tom Hannen and Mark Lumley. The hugs and kisses which accompanied the farewells at Leatherhead station on Saturday showed how well everyone had got on and the return visit in September is eagerly awaited.

A plea from Mrs. Pass Stephanie Gueissaz is a lovely Swiss girl who has been attending Therfield this year and in addition to her studies has been helping the French dept. with group conversation. work. She is looking for accommodation so that she can spend a second year perfecting her English, from Sept. "94 to June '95. Board and lodging is paid direct to the family by the organisation which initially arranged Stephanie's placement. Mrs. Pass would be pleased to give more information if anyone can help.

July 1st is to be Therfield's 1994 FUN DAY - let's hope for better weather this time. We have seen our Headmaster as Henry VIII, a French aristocrat and Christopher Columbus so what can we expect this year? Mr. Cox is talking about a Viking invasion.....

A reminder that the School's Youth Worker, Richard Fairman, publishes a programme of activities at the beginning of each term and the more alert youngsters take these home and so have the chance to go karting, mountain bike riding, visiting laser quest and stay on a narrow boat for a weekend. It seems though that some parents know nothing of these opportunities due to 'pupil post' being unreliable.

Activities still to come in June are Karting on June 8th, Water Palace 15th, Girls Water Activity Day 26th; July has Alton Towers, Bowling, Chessington World of Adventures, Grease. There is a charge but. the visits are well organised, more details from Richard Fairman (081-974-2806). Summer Residential Activities Camps are being held in August.

Even as we go to Press voting is taking place in the School's European Elections - candidates are Richard Brown (Conservative), Lorraine Butler (Lib/Dem.) Alison Lievesley (Labour) and Laura Meyers (Green).
