FROM THE HEADTEACHER
A flood-lit multi-games, all-weather area, adjacent to the main playground by the school field is, we hope, the latest facility to be coming to Therfield. A meeting was held at the school recently with representatives from the Sports Council and Surrey County Council who were very supportive and willing to put in considerable of money towards the expected £68,000 cost. I am hopeful that this facility could be in place by September '95. Representatives from Nynex, the cable people so much in evidence locally, have offered to equip the school with cabling so that satellite TV will be available along with extended use for computers and telephones. This news is of particular interest to Mrs. Pass and her Modern, Languages department as ready access to French and German TV stations will help greatly to add even more variety to their teaching of languages. VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL - Please remember that ALL visitors to the school MUST go to Reception and register. If there is no one in the reception office then please go to the Main Office. Even if you. know the school well it is important that we have a check on who is coming into the building. The date of Year 8 Parents' Evening has had to be changed to Wed. 22nd June, this is because of GCSE examinations. If you have any special concerns please inform Mrs. Gilbert, Head of Year 8. STUDY LEAVE for all Year 11 pupils begins on Thursday, 19th May. GCSE exams start on Monday, 23rd May. Students will be required to complete a clearance certificate and hand in all school text books and library books before they finally leave. Full details of this procedure and news of revision classes will be issued early in May. Year 13 students will take study leave from Friday, 20th May, as will those DVE students who have completed their Diploma work. From May 23-26 Upper Sixth teachers will be available during their normal lesson. times for those students who do not have an A level examination then. Students are encouraged to attend. When they have completed their exams all students must clear by June 23rrd. There will be a tea party in their honour on that day. The Wren and the Archbishop Mr. Digby and Mr. Campbell took a group of Year 11 R.S. students on a visit to London in connection with their studies. The river boat trip was enlivened by a spectacular hail storm and here is Mr. Digby's account of the day - "With its reputation for tale bearing, the wren, one of our smallest birds, has. a powerful voice. When year 11 students in Religious Studies visited St. Paul's recently, they discovered that a Wren, Sir Christopher, had a powerful story to tell - in stones. The building which for long has dominated London's skyline since the Great Fire, was controversial in its design, and, much modified in its final form, completed within the architect's lifetime. The enormity of the project still impresses when climbing to the top. Visiting Lambeth Palace afterwards, tells a different story - personal power. As impressive as the architecture of the Great Hall and Chapel are, it is the presence of all the previous Archbishops peering from their wall paintings that gives a signature to the institutional authority of the Anglican community'head office. Both buildings have a brooding presence about them". PUPIL ACHIEVEMENTS The Sail Training Week in the Isle of Wight produced its usual crop of first rate performances. A total of 37 RYA certificates were awarded, 13 to Y7 and 8 to Y8 pupils having their first taste of sailing with Therfield. Congratulations to James Inge who has been awarded one of the prestigious Arkwright Scholarships. As mentioned in last month's Newsletter, James was one of 24 chosen from a national entry to go forward to the final stages of a competition in Design Technology. A sizeable group of Year 7 and 8 pupils took part this week in the National Schools Mathematics Challenge. Claire Hanson played recently in the SE Region U17 Badminton championships and was runner-up in the girls' singles and winner in the girls doubles. Claire represents the Region (Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex) in the inter-region finals tomorrow. SPORT Cricket : We are looking forward to another successful season. Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 sides are playing in the District Leagues and Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 all in the County Cup competition. A good start was made this week by Year 8 and Year 10 who beat Howard of Effingham, and by Year 9 who were the winners of close match in the county cup against Rutlish - former school of a certain cricket loving Prime Minister! Tennis : Coaching has already started on a Wednesday evening and the school will be offering fixtures for all age groups against local schools. We are also offering a school tournament for boys and girls in each of the Year groups. All students are welcome to enter. Athletics : The club has already begun training. We have the TSB National knock-out cup coming up shortly, followed by the District Championships on the 18th May at Kingsmead Arena. Once again we are hoping to have a number of students selected for the County team. Rounders : The school is also running teams for Years 7, 8, 9 & 10. Volleyball : This is now a very popular club in the junior part of the school. The senior side will be playing in number of tournaments this Summer - at Epsom College, the Farlington Invitation and the Ashcombe outdoor tournament. AN INVITATION : Prepare to be astounded those of you who are newcomers to the Friends' May Ball next Saturday for it is not Cinderella who gets decked out to go to the Ball but Therfield's Main Hall. A touch of magic from the hardworking Friends' Committee means that the Hall is transformed into an eye-catching pavilion just made for dancing. Floating drapes of black and white, cunningly hide the high plainly tiled ceiling, anonymous walls are attractively covered and your table waits invitingly between dances. The date then is May 7th, the time is 8 till midnight, dancing is to live music, a licensed bar supplies the drink, a beautifully prepared buffet supper provides the food - and tickets, £15 each, can be obtained from Barbara Sharkey at the school. Everyone who went last year voted it a top social event, so say to yourselves : "We shall go to the Ball". See you there .... Dates for May Reminder : 23 & 24 June INSET DAYS - pupils NOT in school. |
