THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.5, March 1994

FROM THE HEADMASTER

School Uniform Shop : Last year the Friends ran the uniform shop for the school. For technical reasons we now wish to set up the uniform shop as a separate organisation and we are looking for frustrated shopkeepers who would be willing to help. We are especially looking for someone who might look after the accounts for us.

The scheme obviously raises funds for the school; equally importantly it enables us to control the standard of uniform. This year we will also hope to develop a second hand uniform service. If you are interested please telephone Mrs. Hodgson at the school.

TRAFFIC AROUND THE SCHOOL : We are concerned about the possible dangers to pupils from cars, particularly at the beginning and end of the day. It is particularly important that parents do not 'drop off' or collect their children inside the school grounds. Many parents find it easier to collect children from the side entrance in Cleeve Road and this reduces congestion in Dilston Road.

We have made representation to the Council to improve safety measures but we value your help and consideration to pupils at these busy times.

HIGHER EDUCATION FINANCE : The school has been contacted by Stephen Hall of Aegon Financial Services, specialists in university cost planning. As more and more pupils opt for higher education and less and less help with funding is forthcoming it is prudent far parents to plan ahead. Mr. Hall (081 649 7722) is willing to meet with interested parents and give information and advice, without obligation. The school has no connection with the company.

SEPTEMBER INTAKE : Final agreement on the new intake for the next academic year has been achieved. Therfield will admit 226 Year 7 students in September, plus a further 4 in the Language Unit. County has informed its that buildings to the minimum value of £710,000 will result.

HELP WANTED : Please remember that fabrics, copies of Which magazine and a dressmaking 'body' are still wanted by Home & Food Technology. Also, Mrs. Hodgson would welcome two or three hours help a week in the Careers Library.

MISCELLANY OF NEWS

Final figure for the Sponsored Spell was £1983 - grateful thanks to organisers, sponsors and spellers!

Our Year 10 footballers have reached the semi-final of the County Cup - an exciting match against Carshalton ended 6-6 and we won the penalty shoot-out 3-0! Nerves of steel in Year 10!

Sixth Former Paul Belk has been selected to swim for England Schools in the World Schools Games in Nicosia in May.

Today (Friday) Mr. Thomas and Mr. Cockerill are taking a squad of Rugby players to Richmond to take part in a Festival of Rugby to include coaching and playing and the boys will then stay on to watch the England A versus Ireland A international.

Therfield's U13 Hockey players did well to finish joint runners-up to St. Teresa's in the district tournament last Saturday. Hockey honours are hard to come by as we have to compete with schools which have hockey as their main sport.

Mathematician Mark Baker from the Sixth Form was one of the select few to win his way into the next round of the British Mathematical Olympiad and did wonderfully well to finish in the top 100 particularly as at 16 he was one of the youngest to take part.

Don't forget the Friends' Auction of Promises on March 12th. The promises pledged so far look interesting and include such diverse pleasures as a day's sea fishing to use of a scaffold tower for a month plus two return tickets to Paris courtesy of British Airways and, for those who prefer to stay in Britain, a week's holiday in a cottage in Devon situated nearly next door to the village inn!
