THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.44 May 1997

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Mock Election - The result of the school's Mock election reflected the mood of the country in that there was a big swing away from the Conservatives. Adam Ratliff for the Liberal Democrats was first past the post with 298 votes, followed by Amy Kerbel (Labour) with 226, Matthew Coburn (Conservative) 192 and Lisa Roberts (Referendum) 116. 62.4% of the school population voted.

Congratulations to Douglas Inge and Zoe Robson who were both successful in obtaining Arkwright Scholarships, which is a national award designed to encourage able students to continue with technology and engineering in higher education. A rigorous selection procedure saw these two pupils from Year 11 win through from an original application of 400 and a shortlist of 45!

Douglas and Zoe collect their awards at a ceremony in October and will receive financial backing during their A Level studies plus a donation to Therfield's Technology Department.

Sixth Former Adam Levy is also to be congratulated on being awarded a much sought-after RAF scholarship of 20 hours of flying time to go towards getting his pilot's licence. Adam is a member of Dorking ATC.

Wimbledon FC have accepted Bryn Halliwell on a two year YTS course starting in July. As a goal keeper, Bryn has played for Surrey at all age groups and did his work experience with Wimbledon. Although he expects to spend time cleaning boots and laying out the kit for the first team, Bryn is looking forward to getting in some training with the likes of Vinnie Jones, Marcus Gayle and Dean Holdsworth - "being a keeper helps, they are always looking for someone to take pot shots at", he said.

Poetry - 11 year-old Varsha Raj in Year 7 has had two poems published in 'The Hindu' newspaper.

Badminton - On his 12th birthday, Christopher Langridge of Year 7 had a present he will always remember. He received a letter to say he had achieved one of 6 places in the U13 national squad for badminton. Chris is a regular player for the school and Surrey but national recognition has come as an added spur to success.

Accent on Science - The Science Faculty is still seeking sponsorship for its Science Fayre during the week beginning 23rd June for all KS3 pupils. It will include a planetarium, pyrotechnics lecture, visit from a famous scientist and Environmentalists from Mole Valley. A 'Chemistry is Fun' evening aimed at pupils in Primary School and their parents is proving very popular. The cost of the whole enterprise is likely to be £1000, so if you know of any company who would be willing to play a part in this venture, please contact Mrs Cox, Head of Science Faculty.

Thank you from Susan Kent who is going on an expedition to the Sinai desert with the British Schools Exploring Society in August. She appealed for funds to help finance the trip and thanks all those who supported her. Susan writes, "in particular I would like to thank Matrix Partners, Michael Everett and Co, Lloyds Bank and the Body Shop for their sponsorship and a special thanks to my friends and family for helping to raise the full amount of £2400".

Sailing - at Surrey Schools Sailing Association regatta at Walton, Therfield took 2 first places, 4 seconds and five thirds.

Cruising on board two sailing yachts from Portsmouth and the Hamble to Cowes, Studland Bay and Southampton provided a lively early Bank Holiday weekend for members of the Sailing Club. A variety of weather conditions were met from flat calm to force 7 winds. Navigation was easy when visibility was good but skills were put to the test when sailing at night and on Saturday afternoon when thick fog was encountered - small wonder this is a popular date in this busy Club's calendar!

More sailing - James Spencer, Year 10, who is a member of the Papercourt Club, has been selected to take part in the European championships for the Optimist class. He was only one point short of making the squad for the world championships.

All Year 7 parents will soon receive an invitation and the opportunity to buy tickets - past experience shows that tickets go quickly so it is wise to check the 'pupil post' from time to time!

The next meeting for the Parents' School Prayer Group will be on 18th June at 8 pm Further details about this group from Jill Poole

Polesden House raised an amazing £600 at the Charity Fashion Show held at the school last month. Students and staff paraded down the catwalk in clothes from Hamells, Moss Bros, Change of A Dress and The Wedding Company. It was a very enjoyable evening and a tribute to the organisers, particularly Lisa Green and Edward Drewitt. Many thanks to the companies involved - the money raised will go to 'Help a London Child'.

Requests - Our GCSE Textiles students are in need of an 'overlocker' to give a more professional finish to their work. If this is something you have discarded or no longer need then Mrs Gale would be delighted to hear from you!

Also Mrs Kirton in Learning Support is still eager to receive magazines/comics/teen papers which might encourage reluctant readers to read.

Lockers - each year at this time, students are asked to renew their locker rental for the coming year. Mr Cockerill will accept payment until the end of term -Years 7-9 £6 for 3 terms, Year 10 £5 for 2½ terms.

Special advice - when the firm of SMP (Playgrounds) of Chertsey wanted some ideas on the type of seating teenagers would favour in a leisure area, they decided to do their primary research at Therfield. As a result, our Year 10 Graphics group were asked to put forward ideas and then take part in a competition to produce a suitable design. Liz Bright, a former Therfield pupil, and now a presentation artist with the company came to the school to brief the pupils and was impressed by the ideas put forward in a 'brainstorming' session.

SPORT
Cricket - All years are enjoying a full programme of league and cup cricket. The Year 10s have been receiving coaching courtesy of Surrey CC. The Year 9 team play Ashcombe in the quarter finals of the Callingham Crane Cup and our seniors won the District Six-a-Side tournament.

Athletics - In the District Sports, the Intermediate Boys came third and the Junior Girls were second. In the TSB Cup, the Intermediate Girls and the Junior Boys came second, the Intermediate Boys third and the Junior Girls were placed first and so qualify for the regional final.

Tennis - a school tournament is being held after half term and is open to all. The format will depend on the number of entries.
Participation in the TSB Cup has been a worthwhile experience for our players. Results have been mixed and our pupils have been wide-eyed at the top of the range facilities available at some schools!
