FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Therfield is once again heavily
oversubscribed. We presently have 247 applications
for 200 places. A recent meeting at County Hall has agreed that
our admission numbers should be increased to 230 for the future.
This will be agreed by the Governors if given assurances that
new permanent buildings will be provided and monies included for
community facilities such as increased Dining Hall space, more
corridors for movement plus locker, storage and other spaces.
There has been a significant increase in the
number of parents in Epsom and Ewell seeking places at Therfield
which is very encouraging.
One request please - can you
ensure that all items of clothing are named it will enable us to
return the vast amount of lost property that accrues, including
many expensive items.
AUCTION OF PROMISES
This is a superb event organised by the Friends and
scheduled to be held this year on 12th March. Items and services
offered by staff and parents are auctioned to raise money for
the school - you can 'buy' anything from twelve hours coaching
in Maths to a luxury cake made to your own design! Please book
this night in your diary because last time there were some
excellent bargains and the school raised a lot of money. Jan
Cheeseman (tel) would love to hear from you if you have items or
offers of services you would like auctioned.
PRESENTATION EVENING
This again proved to be an enjoyable and successful
evening - with many positive comments about the general
smartness of the students!! The evening was fully reported in
the local paper and Green Bottle has an extra item. We
do try to get guests of honour who are well known and likely to
have some popular appeal. If any parent has any 'inside
influence' with a personality who 'fits the bill' please let Mr.
Reddin know.
SPONSORED SPELL
A number of new books specifically aimed at Years 7 and
8 have been added to the Resource Centre stock thanks to the
Sponsored Spell held by these years last term. Over £1600 was
raised and divided equally between the Resource Centre and
English Department. Sets of new texts were purchased by the
English Department.
Tutor groups indulged in some friendly rivalry to
see who could raise most money and special congratulations
should go to Dominic Ross (7PCK) who raised £60 and Rochelle
Wood (7JMA) for collecting over £50.
Other winners of £5 book tokens were Naomi
Simpkins, Karl Zweig, Rebecca Jenkins, Tim Maycock, Alastair
Taylor, Sarah Parrett, Oswaldo Challen, all from Year 7 and
Caroline Dore-Boize, Jennifer Sweetman, Kelly Hawkins-Farr,
Louise Straker, Tim Harper, Michelle Simmonds, Mark Adlington
from Year 8.
Mr. N. Holt, who devised and organised the Spell
was delighted with the response and the enthusiasm shown by the
pupils.
SPORT
A welcome pat on the back for our Rugby
players came from the RFU last month, following reports of
Therfield's success in the Effingham Tournament Alun Thomas had
a pleasant letter from Secretary, Dudley Wood, plus a gift of 10
new rugby balls and some England Tshirts!
Paul Belk, who is now studying A levels in the
Sixth Form, had a highly successful first international for
England against Germany. Points were hard to come by for the
England junior squad but Paul swimming at the
end of day one gained a morale boosting win in the 100 metres
freestyle in a fast time of 51.40 seconds - a new Surrey Senior
record.
Emily Varian in Year 10 was a member of the
successful Dorking & Leatherhead Gym Club
which took the overall prize in the Surrey Gymnastics
Championships. Emily was one of five gold medallists.
Our cross country runners have
got off to a splendid start and a number of boys and girls will
be representing Central District at the County Championships at
Reigate Priory on February 5th; our U17 girls took first place
in the district event and the U15 A team came second.
In Badminton our U16 girls team
played exceptionally well this season and reached the
semi-finals of the Nationals. Well done to Clare Hanson, Anna
Hanson, Kate Luke and Sarah Butler.
Our footballers continue to get
encouraging results at all levels - this week the U14 team beat
last year's winners Winston Churchill School 5-3 in the County
Cup. The U15s won 6-4 against Sutton Grammar, after being 3-1
down and on Tuesday the U13s beat Collingwood 4-1 and are now in
the semi-finals.
We have some promising players in Netball
- our U12s fielded two teams and beat Reigate Grammar 9-6,
18-10.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
A Trophy for Sporting Achievement was voted by the
School Council as a top priority. This will be bought from the
£200 allocated from School Fund to be spent by the Council -
which represents all tutor groups in the school - and the
remainder will be spent on new cycle racks.
REQUESTS
Can anyone spare an hour or two a week to help
catalogue and file in the Careers Library? Contact Mrs Hodgson.
The Home & Food Technology department still
requires fabrics - especially plain material - also any recent
copies of 'Which' magazine, particularly if these could be
donated on a regular basis and does anyone have a dressmaking
'body' they no longer want. Please contact Mrs. Shannon if you
can help.
HEDGEHOGS
Claire Atkins, Sarah Shimmin, Hannah Fenn, Amy Hunter
and Helen Taylor all in Mrs. Kenworthy's group in Year 9
cornered the market in 'hedgehog sales' at the School Fair.
Their diligence and expertise in making hedgehogs of all shapes,
sizes and colours meant that a cheque for £53 has been sent to
'St. Tiggywinkle's Animal Charity' at Aylesbury.
MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE
Although Mrs. Nicole Jones is at present unable to
administer the arrangements, the Cruise will still go ahead -
providing there is sufficient support. Mr. P. Jones, Head of
Year 9, is the stand-in organiser though he has no ambitions to
accompany the cruise, claiming to get sea sick on a mill pond! A
meeting has been arranged for Monday (31st) 7.30 at the school
for those interested.
FROM THE GOVERNORS
The chairman, Mr. John Hickey, had a column featured in
the business magazine 'Partnership Points' in which he stressed
the importance of links between education and business within
the local community.
This theme was also discussed at last week's
meeting of the Public Relations Committee and the governors
would welcome contacts and expressions of interest from the
business community.
EXCHANGE OF VIEWS
The French partners of our 'A' level students will be
with us from 21st Feb to 7th March. Mrs. Pass and Mr. Boucry
have an interesting programme planned for them, including a
backstage visit to the National Theatre, a look in at Question
Time at the House of Commons and, as the French students combine
Drama with English studies, they will join their hosts for a
joint drama session thanks to Miss Harris and Ms. Phelps.
