THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.34 June 1996

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Work on the new Sixth Form block and extension to the Dining Hall is progressing well. The walkways are already in use.

AFRICA EVENING takes place on Monday (7 pm). All Year 7 are involved in a programme which includes a fashion show, dance, music and art exhibition. This is a very popular event, 'last minute' tickets available from Mrs Shannon - £2 for adults and £1 for children.

Rehearsals, costume fitting and lighting checks are in full swing for the school's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream on July 12th and 13th. Tickets (£5 and £7) can be ordered from the School Office. This is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies and, having exchanged its ancient Greek setting for 1930's England, Therfield's production promises to be full of surprises..... but we do need your support as an audience!

This year Sports Day will take on a new look. The four Houses have selected 13 boys and 11 girls to represent them in a series of events. Each competitor has to compete in two events. Field competitions (javelin, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot and discus) will take place on July 15th and track events on July 16th starting at 2 pm until 4.30 pm. Parents are welcome. School will finish at 3.15 pm on July 16th and those pupils who wish to watch the sports from then onwards may do so. Supervision will be provided.

Our GNVQ students have the final moderation on their year's work next week. Parents, local businessmen and school governors were invited to a Presentation of Work by the students. Students attended to answer questions about the course and display some of the new skills they had acquired.

The exchange visit to France went without a hitch - Therfield arrived on time and with no police escort this year! The group's excellent behaviour was commented on by the French school's headteacher and the staff were impressed by our pupils willingness to participate in lessons - particularly Anna Oberg in Spanish and Owen Smith in Biology!

The by now traditional basketball match between Therfield and Jean Monnet was once again won by our boys. Everyone had a great day at the seaside and at Futuroscope where the weather was glorious and there were no queues!!

E111 forms will be given back to pupils at a meeting on Wednesday, 3rd July when a letter to parents will be given out concerning a refund.

SCHOOL UNIFORM: Sales of new uniform will take place in the Gym at the school next Wednesday (3rd) between 4 and 8 pm and Friday (5th) between 5 and 8 pm. Uniform can, of course, still be obtained by collecting an order form from the School Office. There will be a sale of second hand uniform on Tuesday (2nd) between 2 and 4 pm in the Entrance Hall. Mrs. Hodgson is still keen to receive any out grown uniform, either for sale or as a donation; blazers, in particular, are needed.

The value of a token for a free school meal goes up to £1.20 in September - an increase of 5p.

CABARET EVENING
The traditional grand finale to a busy year for our musicians takes place on Thursday, 18th July when the choir, Lower School Singers, Orchestras and soloists will be featured in a lively programme. Dancing to the Swing Band will take place after Supper. Tickets £3 for adults and £1 for children are inclusive of a light supper.

Pupil News:
Jon Buckley and Melanie Hall have been elected as Senior Students for the coming year.

Michael Peck (Year 9) and Penelope Rhodes (Year 7) will be taking part in a BBC children's drama "The Biz" which is being filmed in London between August and October.

Jennifer Buchanan (Year 8) was in the open air production of The Tempest at Polesden Lacey earlier this month and Ahila Ramakrishnan (Year 9) was one of the pupils performing an Indian Dance in BBC 2's programme "Young Musicians Workshop" on June 8th.

A Mathematics magazine called 'Mathematical Pie' challenged readers to produce a design for a poster showing that mathematics can be fun. Several pupils under the guidance of Mrs. Hardy took up the challenge with Anna Langridge achieving a gold award, Robert Caldwell and Andrew Taylor silver, Paul Nunns, Simon Matthews and Edward Waller bronze. Mrs. Hardy runs a weekly Maths Club where enthusiasts have the opportunity to have fun with and manipulate numbers.

The Sailing Club Barbecue attracted record numbers of sailors and spectators. Perfect weather for sailing and eating outdoors meant that everyone had a wonderful evening, which could raise as much as £1000 for the Club. The money is needed for a new double trailer and to help with refurbishing the boat house on its new site. Mr. Stewart is most grateful to all those parents who helped, the sponsors and the record number of pupils who sailed.

A joint Maths/Science venture saw all of Year 7 visit London Zoo to supplement teaching of the National Curriculum in these subjects. Reptiles, big cats, giraffes, mammals and aquarium life all came under scrutiny and will be the subject of worksheets in both departments.

Other Science department visits include a day trip to Seven Sisters Country Park and a residential course at Swansea where pupils will stay at the University.

FUN DAY ON JULY 12TH will this year have an Olympic Theme to mark the 100th anniversary of the first modem Olympics in Athens. In the morning the school will hold a series of sponsored relay marathons (minimum of 20 runners per team) to attempt to break the 1896 time for the Marathon - 2 hr 58.50.

Pupils are enthusiastically recruiting teams and, hopefully, getting sponsors. If any parent is keen to run - contact Mr. Hill at school - there is also talk of a staff team. Traditionally, Fun Day is an event which takes in the whole school. Mufti will be worn, lessons will have an Olympic theme, the canteen will be supplying Greek food and the afternoon programme will introduce some
'Olympic' style events. A letter giving fuller details and sponsorship forms will be going out next week. School may finish early but supervision will be provided. In the meantime, Mr. Cox would be very grateful if anyone could lend us a marquee for the day ....!

The Geography Dept. has had an exceptionally busy few weeks starting with the Year 8 trip to Paris where they spent four days. The programme included a boat trip down the Seine in lovely weather, a visit to the Eiffel Tower where, to the surprise of the staff, everyone enjoyed walking up the steps to the second stage, and a day trip to EuroDisney.

The Year 10 residential visit to Swanage had a serious intent for GCSE Geography projects, including urban studies, management strategies and a survey to see whether Corfe Castle needed a bypass. A walk to Old Harry Rocks and inspection of the sand dunes of Studland Bay were popular as well as being instructive. Year 7s wore old clothes and took fishing nets and sketch pads for a visit to West Humble and a closer study of the River Mole.

A MATHS CHALLENGE! : Eight Year 10 Mathematicians spent the morning of the 24th June working with pupils from three other local schools - Howard of Effingham St. Andrew's and The Ashcombe - to solve some challenging mathematical problems. Teams consisted of pupils from more than one school and Mona Wooding and Vikki Cannons were members of the winning team who scored 15 out of a possible 20 points.

Special Request : If anyone hears of a small freezer, free or going cheap, please let the Bursar know - it will be used in the Medical Room for the ice cubes/packs used regularly for first aid.
