THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.3, Dec 1993

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Farewell to Mrs. Perry, the Deputy Head at Therfield. She has been appointed to the Headship of The Warwick School at Redhill. We shall be very sorry to see her go, as she has made a huge contribution to the development of the school. For the last few years Mrs. Perry has had the full responsibility for the curriculum, welfare and progress of all the students in Years 10 and 11. It is no accident that during that time our GCSE scores have steadily improved. We wish her every success and happiness as she takes up this new post.

PROSPECTIVE PARENTS PROGRAMME
We have just completed our programme of welcoming new parents to the school. We have shown around between 2-300 and had an even larger number at Open Evening. All the indications at the moment suggest that we will be oversubscribed for the coming year. More details will be made available when we know them.

SCHOOL CAROL SERVICE
Mr Pratt, Head of Music, now has his sights set on our Annual Carol Service, held at St. George's Church in Ashtead. This is a marvellous way of celebrating Christmas and allowing the musical and choral talents of our students to be displayed. There is a warm welcome to all of you at the service which is at 7.30 on Monday, 13th December.

REMEMBER - Friends' Christmas Fair on SUNDAY 2.00 PM

FROM THE GOVERNORS
Following the recent tragic accidents the Governors want to reassure you concerning mini-bus safety. Our mini-bus is fully fitted with seat belts and all students are required to wear them; seats face to the front. All staff have to pass a Test before they are allowed to take pupils out.

CRUISING AHEAD An educational Eastern Mediterranean cruise during April 1995 is being organised by Mrs. Nicole Jones, in conjunction with Discovery Cruises, a specialist school travel company. A letter setting out details has been sent home - the brief facts are that ports of call include Istanbul, Kusadasi to visit Ephesus, Alexandria and Port Said for Cairo and the Pyramids and Ashdod for Jerusalem and Bethlehem, cost is £700 and the dates are April 7-14th 1995. So as to give interested parents a chance to find out more and ask questions, Mrs. Jones has arranged a meeting in the Resource Centre on Tuesday, 14th December at 7.30 pm. Discovery Cruises will be represented and a film will be shown. The cruise is available for Years 9,10 and Lower Sixth in 1995.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Very often it is the small things that happen 'off camera' which serve to round up a school event .. in the run-up to Prospective Parents' Evening, Leah Perona-Wright, one of the leading players in the orchestra, was slumped in the Medical Room looking pale and decidedly unwell. Despite soothing words from the Headteacher and Mr. Wood that "somehow we would manage'', Leah arrived punctually at school, took part in the performance .. and then went home to her sick bed.

Likewise at the Macbeth performances, William Tonkin, one of the stage and lighting crew was involved in a nasty road accident on the Thursday, but managed to get in and play a full part in both performances on Friday and Saturday. We hope a review of Macbeth will appear in the local paper, the actors and backstage workers have been rightly applauded but special thanks also to Mrs Berge and the Y11 GCSE Food group for the excellent refreshments, impeccably served.

CHANGE OF SCENE
From Corporate Communications Manager with Dairy Crest to part-time lab technician at Therfield must have come as something of a culture shock. But John Friend who has been a technician in our Science Department for the last 17 months after unexpectedly being given 'early retirement' laughingly denies that the changeover was too traumatic. "I came from a Science background and have always been used to working with lots of people, so I didn't feel too overwhelmed", he said. Predictably the biggest difference he noticed was in the realms of funding and facilities - "at school every penny counts and you have to scrounge to keep the department going". John now leaves to take up a post as Assistant Markets Editor with The Grocer magazine.

SPECIAL REQUESTS
The Home & Food Technology department has a need for Which magazines for the A Level students but find it too expensive to take out a subscription. If any parent takes this publication and would like to donate it to the department while the information is still relatively up-to-date Mrs. Shannon would be most happy to hear from you.

Also, the department still has a need for Textiles. Many thanks to those parents who donated fabrics following an earlier request and these have been put to good use. Any additional fabrics - especially plain - would be gratefully received. Again contact Mrs. Shannon.

WELCOME : Mrs. Diane Richards, an American who is married to an Englishman, will be joining the English department next term. Mrs. Richards has a joint first class honours degree in English and computing and a particular interest in girls' soccer!

NOTE - Auction of Promises change of date to 12/3/93

SPORT Saturday, November 13th, was a day of great endeavour but not quite as much glory as had been hoped for our Cross Country runners in the TSB Cup, The dreaded 'flu bug decimated our teams though Tim Weeks should be congratulated on coming in 20th in a large field.

Special mention must go to 12 year old Oliver Arnell, who had played football for the school in the morning and was then pulled from a well-earned soak in the bath to make up the junior boys team in the cross country! However, Therfield runners came good in the District event a week later and seven of them will be taking part in the County championships - Neil Churchill was 3rd and George Tavner 5th in the juniors, Jon Buckley came home first closely followed by Tim Weeks (3rd) in the intermediate boys and it was good to have three of our runners well to the fore in the senior section - Gareth Dickinson (2nd), Stuart Thomas (6th) and Lee Betteridge (9th).

Frosty pitches played havoc with the football fixtures, but at the beginning of the month our U13 team had a good win against a strong Ashburton side 3-1 in the County Cup and our Year 10 team beat George Abbott 3-2 in the same competition. This week the U16 team also prospered beating Bishop Reindorp school 6-2, again in the County Cup.
