FROM THE HEADTEACHER
This has been a busy month for interviews and I am pleased to report that we are now fully staffed for the coming year. (News of who is going and who is coming in the next Newsletter). Agreement has now been reached with the County Authorities on the building programme required as a result of the school being asked to take more students. The Governors were especially concerned that issues of overcrowding must be properly addressed. Extra funds have been found. The programme will be: 1. New additional dining hall/drama area PUPIL ACHIEVEMENT As well as Robert, gold award winners were -
Philip Haines, Clare Easton, Louise Bailey, Claire Pringle,
Magnus Coney, Eleanor Luke, Andrew Taylor. Elizabeth Cornfield in Year 9 will be performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican during August. Elizabeth successfully auditioned for a part in 'Spring Awakening' by Frank Wedekind. UNIFORM INFORMATION - This is a reminder as letters have been sent home - The Friends are organising a sale of second hand uniform on July 5th from 2-4 pm. If you have uniform to sell or want to buy, contact Carol Belk. New uniform sales will be held at school on July 6th (mainly for new parents) and July 7th, both from 5-8 pm. Order forms can still, of course, be obtained through the School Office. Also parents of new Year 7 pupils may purchase Art Packs between 5-6 pm on July 6th. LOCKERS - Mr. Cockerill still has some lockers available for next term. If you want to rent a locker for your child the rental fee is £6 a year. All Years have been approached but money has been slow to come in so it is now a case of first-come-first served. Money should be placed in an envelope, clearly marked with the pupil's name and tutor group and given to Mr. Cockerill. EXHIBITION OF ART - A preview of Art work by A Level students will take place at the school on Friday, July 7th. Mrs. Newstead, Head of Art and Design, will be pleased to welcome parents and friends in E7 from 7-8 pm where work by Sixth Formers will be on view. Uniform rules have been relaxed until the end of term - blazers and ties will not have to be worn. Jumble Sale - please save any jumble ready for the Friends next sale on Sat. 23rd Sept. Details about collection later. HELP PLEASE! - the school's sailing hut is being dismantled, refurbished and moved to a new site to make way for the new 6th Form block. Can any parent offer storage for a boat and trailer during the Summer months? Mr Stewart would be very grateful - contact him at school if you can help. The Sponsored Sail & Barbecue held last Friday at Papercourt was a great success - for once sun and wind combined to give perfect conditions and a record number of parents attended. When all sponsor forms have been returned it is hoped that receipts will exceed last year's excellent total of £800. The money goes on Club activities and equipment - last year a new boat was purchased and was sailing in this year's event. GERMAN EXCHANGE - forewarned about our weather, 30 German exchange students and two teachers arrived suitably clad in sweaters and carrying raingear - and enjoyed a lovely week of sunshine! They had a full programme of visits to school, London and Hampton Court. They were joined on the Canterbury trip by their English hosts where a questionnaire about the Cathedral taxed everyone's knowledge. Ms. Neumann and Mr. Marshallsay are now busy finalising arrangements for our return visit in September. A photographer appointed by Surrey County Council visited the school recently to take photos for publicity purposes. A number of group photos were taken in lessons and on the sports field but if any parents/guardians have an objection to their child's photo being used they should contact the school. It is impossible to write individually as we don't know which pictures Surrey intend to use. The value of wearing cycle helmets was shown recently when one of our Sixth Formers was involved in a road accident and was advised that if she had not been wearing a helmet her injuries would have been much more serious. A similar accident befell a member of staff who also gave thanks to the protection offered by a helmet. DIARY DATES CRICKET: the Year 7, 8, 9 & 10 elevens are all doing well and to date are unbeaten in their Leagues. There have been some excellent individual performances with batsmen scoring half centuries - quite a feat in 20 over games! ATHLETICS : the Intermediate Boys reached the area final of the TSB Cup with a school record team total of 372 points. Michael Wiltshire, James Parker, Sean Barnett, Bryn Halliwell, Mark Leyshon and Gavin Fuller all scored more than 17 pts in their events - above the national average. At the District Sports, the Intermediate Boys finished 5th out of 13, Girls 6/9; Junior Boys 4/13, Girls 3/13. Sports Day is on the 17th (field) and 18th (track) at 2 pm - parents are welcome to attend. Tracey Bloomfield equalled the District High Jump record in coming second in this event and will hopefully now get her County colours. NETBALL : District League placings - U12A 3rd/8; U 13A 2nd/10; U 14A 9th/9; U 148 5th/6; U 15A 8th/10. Rehearsals for Kiss Me Kate are going well and tickets are now on sale. Wildlife Aid in Leatherhead sends a special message of thanks to Molly Robson, a year 11 pupil. While helping out at the Centre she had good reason to know about the antiquated and inadequate telephone system. On her own initiative she contacted Mercury and they have installed a new switchboard system free of charge. |
