THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.21 April 1995

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Verbal feedback from the school's OFSTED inspection has been very positive - excellent, in fact. A summary will be sent out as soon as we receive the written report and details given of how to obtain a copy of the full report.

GENERAL NEWS

The Spring Concert held at the end of March during the tensions of Ofsted Week was a popular success. Well attended and impeccably performed our thanks go to Mr. Pratt, Mr. Wood, all the performers and the Friends who provided refreshments for another evening of first class entertainment.

Easter was a busy holiday for visits involving students from all areas of the school. The cruise which took in visits to Israel, Egypt, Crete and Turkey was voted a complete success with special memories for those who went camel riding! Mrs. Nicole Jones, organiser, reports that places for the 1996 cruise were all taken by December '94 but she has plans to get in early for 1997!

The traditional Sail Training Week on the Isle of Wight run by Mr. Stewart and Mrs. Wingrove was so successful that the school has received a letter from the training establishment saying how pleased they were to have Therfield students staying there and congratulating us on the standard of sailing and behaviour of our students. Forty pupils attended and 32 RYA Proficiency certificates were awarded - 19 at Level II which is the basic level and aimed at those youngsters starting sailing, 8 at Level II the intermediate stage and 1 at Level V representing a high level of attainment. Emily Porter and Matthew Strickland achieved their Instructors' Certificates.

While the Sail Training Week has been running for a number of years, a new venture involving 83 students and 8 staff from Year 8 also proved popular and successful. Miss Stewart headed a Geography field trip to Paris for five days. This fulfilled the function of studying a modern day European capital - the pupils visited the medieval part of Paris and compared it with the high rise developments of La Defense - gave many of the students their first taste of living abroad and also took in a visit to Euro-Disney. (Mr. Boucry is becoming quite an expert on the best rides to go on!)

French Exchange students arrived here on Tuesday. Their programme includes a number of visits to London as well as a joint trip with their English hosts to Canterbury.

Fifty Year 11 students are going to Dagenham today to see how Ford cars are made. This has been arranged by the Geography department to help with GCSE studies.

Daniel Shimmin who is in the Sixth Form and who plans to go on to read Social & Political Studies at Churchill College, Cambridge will be spending a 'year out' with the Project Trust working in the townships of South Africa. Each project volunteer has to be self-funded and Daniel's target is £2,950.

As well as studying for his A Levels in History, Politics and Economics, Daniel is taking on a number of odd jobs to help raise the money. He would be grateful for any offers of sponsorship - £8 for a day overseas, £56 for a week - cheques should be made payable to The Project Trust. The Trust is an educational charity founded in 1968 and aims to enable volunteers to experience life and work outside Europe, placing them in jobs that will bring real benefit to the community they work in without taking jobs away from local people.

SPORTS ROUND-UP
During the Summer term we are running Cricket teams for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. They all play in the County Cups and District League and we hope for another successful season.

The boys tennis teams in Years 9 and 10 will be competing for the first time in the National Midland Bank competition and in Athletics Therfield will be taking part in the National Milkin-Action team contests for both junior and intermediate boys and girls. The District Athletic championships take place on May 18th and numerous inter-school fixtures will be arranged.

Looking back - once again the school sides in Football had a good season. In the County Cup the Year 7 & 9 teams reached the quarter finals and in the District League the Year 9 team were unbeaten for the second year running and won their league. Results have not been finalised but it looks as though the other sides - Years 7, 8 and 10 - finished as runners-up.

Special mention should be made of the boys who played for Surrey this year - U19 Daniel Dunleavy, Daniel Lacey, Wayne Sturman; U16 Neil Smith; U14 Bryn Halliwell. This is the first year the school has had 5 players in county sides.

Basketball - the final league tables have yet to be printed. However, the Year 8, 9, 10, 11 and U19s all played in county league and cup competitions.

Cross Country - This has been an outstanding season for the Cross Country teams. Therfield reached the Regional final with both junior and intermediate teams in the Milk-in -Action cup.

We took part in the sub-mile cross country relays throughout the season. The junior boys team won the district championships and the intermediate boys finished runners-up. The Year 7 Boys and Girls won the county U12 competition and all runners were selected to run for Surrey in an inter-counties triangular match. Tim Weeks and Gareth Dickinson ran for Surrey in the
All-England championships.

Badminton - once again we played in the very strong Browning National Competition and we have high hopes of our junior players.

Rugby - is increasing in popularity with teams for Years 7& 8, 9, 10 and 11. The very wet winter ruined a number of fixtures and mini tournaments.

Hockey & Netball - all teams played in the District League and tournaments. We are still awaiting final results but we could be
runnersup in the U12 and U13 leagues. For Hockey Catherine Nicholls was picked for the U21 County Mixed Team.

Auditions for Kiss Me Kate have been held this week. Miss Harris and her team have been delighted with the response and announce that Patruchio/Fred Graham will be played by David Harber with Laura Meyers as Kate/Lilli Vanessi. The role of Bill CaIhoun/Lucentio goes to Matt Enston with Bianca/Lois Lane played by Laura Nicoll. Brushing up their Shakespeare are the four gangsters - Richard Crooks, Jon Skull, Jake Hetherington and Oliver Bazeley. Show dates are July 13, 14 & 15.

Y9 National Curriculum Tests - Year 9 pupils will be sitting these Tests on May 5, 9 & 10. They will take place in the Main Hall and last for around 1 hour per paper. In the afternoon, the papers are expected to finish at around 3.15 pm and Year 9 pupils will be allowed to leave school to go home. If you do not wish your child to leave school early, please inform the school and he/she can stay and read in the Hall until the usual end of school day.
