Issue No.19 March 1995
| FROM THE HEADTEACHER
At the time of going to Press the OFSTED inspectors are still with us and I will be reporting their findings to you in due course. Every parent will receive a summary of the report with the option of purchasing the full report. I am very grateful to all those parents who made the effort to attend the Inspector's meeting with parents on March 9th and to all of you who filled in and returned the questionnaire. Any parent who is interested in attending a group providing help and support to those struggling with troublesome and temperamental teenagers should contact me with their name and address. Coping with adolescents can sometimes be helped by talking and chatting to others who are experiencing or have experienced similar situations and, hopefully, this new group will prove useful and supportive. We wish Mrs. Gill Cox, Head of Science, all the best as she goes on maternity leave. We say a more permanent goodbye and good luck to Kevin Tipper who is returning to his first love of flying and will be piloting Boeing 737s for British Airways instead of teaching Physics to Therfield pupils! Miss Wood will be Acting Head of Science and replacement teachers are Mrs. Kathleen McGregor ;and Mr. Edward Walliss. As is our custom at the end of term, school will finish just before 1 o clock on April 7th. School re-starts usual time April 24th. (Mon) Pupil Achievement Gareth Dickinson (Sixth Form) and Tim Weeks (Year 11) who ran for Surrey in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire covered themselves not only in mud but also in praise. A letter from Surrey Schools Athletic Association reports that Surrey won the Senior and Junior titles adding "I am pleased to report that Gareth and Tim played significant roles in our successful. championships". Gareth, who has run for Surrey at junior, intermediate and senior levels, was the 5th Senior Surrey boy home and is ranked 41st nationally. He is the 9th best Senior boy to run for Surrey in the nationals over the last ten years. Tim was the 7th Surrey, runner home in the Intermediate section and a special tribute is paid to his "enthusiasm, determination and good attitude being a credit to his school". Our Year 7 runners also did well in the Inter-counties races at Reigate on Saturday with Emma Firth finishing 6th in her group. Congratulations go to Jo Woollatt in Year 8 who won the Intermediate Girls 100 metres breastroke in the Surrey Schools Swimming Championships held at Trinity School, Croydon in February. Jo has been selected to represent Surrey Schools when the team competes against Kent Schools at Orpington in June. Kathryn Hanrahan (Year 7) and Kate Ellis (Year 8) have both received Highly Commended awards in the annual poetry competition run by the Surrey Advertiser. Emily Varian (Year 11) has been recruited into the development squad of the national gymnastics team. GENERAL NEWS A visit backstage was a special treat for Mr. Wood's GCSE music group when they saw Les Miserables recently. A member of the cast, Samantha Lavender, was a fellow student of Mr. Wood's at the Royal Academy of Music and took them backstage. where the stage manager talked to them about the set. Les Miserables is the set work for GCSE music and the visit enabled them to see the songs they have been studying in the context of the show and the story. A special plea from the School Office - please do label all clothes. We have a surprising collection of coats, sweaters, shoes etc - all of which could have been returned if there had been a name inside. If you need to bring money into school for a pupil, please see that it is in in envelope and clearly labelled with the name and tutor group of the pupil concerned. Mrs. Nicole Jones and 12 pupils leave for their Mediterranean Cruise on 7th April. They will be in a party of 150 youngsters from Surrey - 600 overall - who will be visiting Israel (the Dead Sea), Egypt (the Pyramids) Crete and Turkey. Those of you tuned into Radio Mercury may have heard good wishes for the trip being broadcast as Therfield was featured in School of the Week. Places are still available on the 1996 Cruise to Cyprus and Greece ..... See Mrs. Jones on her return.!! 'Tired but happy' seemed to be the verdict from those Year 8 pupils returning from their three day Maths course on the South Coast. As well as a visit to Fishbourne Roman museum where they studied the Mosaics they were involved in probability studies on the beach and estimated the volume of an empty swimming pool by working inside it as well redesigning a new pool. Definitely a popular trip! Sixth Form 'break out' teams got as far afield as Liverpool, Manchester and somewhere in France! In so doing they raised over £600. This venture was combined with Red Nose Day and a mufti day plus 'slave auction' so that over £1200 was raised to be divided among House Charities, Red Nose Day and a contribution to Sixth Former Danny Shimmin who needs to raise £2950 for Project Trust before embarking on a 'year out' teaching English in the townships of South Africa. Using different routes the IT department and the Resource Centre have reached the same enviable destination - both are now able to access Inter-Net (the information Super Highway). This means that staff and pupils can now have access to information from all over the world - the IT department has already downloaded pictures of Mars from the NASA computer in Pasadena, USA. FROM THE FRIENDS OF THERFIELD
GRAND FUND RAISING EVENT FOR 1995 - the Friends plan to hold a Grand Raffle in July. The funds raised from this event are to be used to provide the school with a New Sound System for the main hall - a much needed replacement for the old and now defunct system. This is a major project and will cost around £5000. Each pupil in the school will be asked to sell 5 books of raffle tickets (£1 per book) - anyone wishing to sell more will be encouraged to do so!! Hopefully, the prizes will be marvellous and multifarious - donations, ideas welcomed - but it is important that everyone helps to sell the tickets. The draw will take place on the last night of the school production of Kiss Me Kate on 15th July and tickets will go home for sale in June. Do support us.
