FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of the term I would like to thank you for all that you have done to support your children and the chool during the year. It has been a very successful year with a number of exciting new developments.

The OFSTED report and the Kirkland Rowell School Satisfaction Survey were extremely positive, reflecting the high achievement and outstanding opportunities provided for students at Therfield and giving us some very encouraging feedback about the support we have from our school community. Both also gave us some thoughts about areas for development and we have included these as we have worked with parents, staff and students in reviewing and creating the new school development plan. The Parent Focus Group was a great success this year with 30 parents attending to discuss key issues in the development of the school.

The introduction of the House System has been seen as a hugely positive move and the House Days and Sports Day, which were held this term, were wonderful examples of the school community working together and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process.

The new website has been very well received and the introduction of schoolcomms has made communication with parents much more effective, so do please let us have an email contact for you if you have not already done so.

We welcome our largest year 7 group for a number of years in September and we are looking forward to the contribution they will make with the skills and talents they bring to Therfield.

I wish you and your families a very happy and relaxing summer break.
Susan Willman

Art

Leatherhead Festival
We were delighted to submit Art work for display at Leatherhead Theatre again this year. Local schools were asked to submit a small selection of work highlighting the diverse range of creativity that our students have to offer. Work on display included portraits, landscapes, print work and mixed media pieces by Nick Ashurst, Kim Blackwell, Emily Clarkson, Anthony Harrop, Emily Price, Siobhan Jackman, Philip Smith, Elle Malaspina, Emma Terry, Peter Stock, Bethany Howard and Nicole Davis.

Nicole Davis won second prize for her mixed media flower which she has worked extremely hard to produce for her GCSE Tate Modern project. Well done Nicole!

Year 11 Ball

On Thursday 26 June 2008 the Year 11 students had their Year 11 Ball to celebrate the completion of their GCSE exams and Year 11. This Ball could be considered somewhat of a pioneering event as it was the first time it was held off site, at the Sovereign Suite - Preston Cross Hotel in Little Bookham, and the first time it was held in the summer after the GCSE exams.

Students took the opportunity to get dressed up and looked impressive in their suits and dresses. In fact the staff all commented that they had never seen the students looking so smart. Almost as amazing was the variety of vehicles the students arrived to the event in. There was a wide range of stretched limousines but the two most memorable arrivals were the group of students who arrived in a blue camper van and one student who arrived on the back of a motorbike.

The Sovereign Suite was decorated with an assortment of balloon arrangements provided by BDD Events. It was a mere twist of fate that Preston Cross Hotel had recently refurbished the function room and the new colour scheme perfectly complemented the supplied decorations. The most popular attraction at the Ball was the chocolate fountain that was hired from Hot Chocolates. Many of the students and staff took the opportunity to dip a tasty treat into the cascading chocolate.

Entertainment on the night was provided by DJ Paul Dawson, who played a good mix of popular songs, and the Year 11 Oscar Ceremony where ten awards were presented to students. The evening, including the students’ arrivals, was documented by photographers Barry Holder and Jordan Holder-Mansfield, who between them took over 780 photos.

All of the staff, students and individuals involved thought the night was a great success and set a high standard for future Year 11 Balls. The behaviour of the students was impeccable and it was a fitting end to Year 11.

Thanks must go to the Year 11 Ball Committee (Josie Anderson, Nikki Barclay, Lydia Devonshire, Steph Leyland, Ellie Pattison, Nicola Piantino, Cathy Poplett and Nicki Shepherd) who had spent a year organising the event.

English and Media

We are coming to the end of another successful and busy year for the English & Media Faculty. Students have had opportunities to participate in a wide range of extra-curricula activities, for example; Year 11 students went to London to see the some of the poets whose work they have studied, perform and discuss their writing; Year 9 students watched a performance of The Tempest in preparation for their Key Stage 3 tests and Year 8 students saw a lively and enjoyable performance of extracts of a number of Shakespeare’s plays and had the opportunity to join in with the actors on the stage.

A group of Year 8 students took part in the BBC News School Report, producing a news programme over the course of a day and, in the process, interviewed Radio Four’s Evan Davies and Dave Spinks, who plays Keith Miller in Eastenders. Year 9 students have followed The Carnegie Prize for children’s literature shadowing procedure, reading all the books on the shortlist and deciding on their own winner Finding Violet Park by Jenny Valentine, unlike the judges who chose Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve.

Year 13 students spent an extremely interesting day at the British Library, attending a series of workshops on English Language and being lucky enough to handle some of the ancient texts. A Level Literature and Media Studies students have attended conferences and lectures to widen their subject knowledge and all our Year 12 students have attended a talk by Professor Marion Wynne Davies from Surrey University on university entrance.

The Media Studies A Level and GCSE course which we have introduced over the last few years are now well established and successful; our first Media Studies A Level students entered degree courses in 2007 and have already had opportunities to work for the BBC on their trainee programmes. Students find the courses both challenging and stimulating and we feel, despite the negative impression given by the popular press, that these courses provide them with opportunities to develop their knowledge of media technology, to gain hands-on experience of media production and to understand the role of the media in modern life. The re-designed, colourful and professionally produced school magazine, published termly this year, indicates our students’ level of success.

Miss Tilley and Mr Mentz, both of whom have been with us for several years are leaving at the end of term to take up other teaching positions and will be very much missed by their colleagues and their students.

Gifted & Talented

Entrepreneurs in Action (EiA) have been working with many schools across the South East to bring the concept of Business to as many students as possible. This started just after Easter when 100 ‘Young Gifted and Talented’ students (or potentially so) from schools in Croydon and Lambeth participated in a programme, ‘From Classroom to Boardroom’ . This was arranged with the support of the national ‘Young Gifted and Talented’ Programme, for which EiA is now an accredited supplier.

Therfield was invited to take part by Rydens School in Walton, in an EiA Business Challenge week – an exciting and intensive experience where students are set a real life challenge by an Executive from a real business, work on the problem all week and present the results back to the business at their Headquarters on the last day. Rydens School were hosting the event from the 7th – 11th July.

Therfield was asked to nominate up to 10 Gifted and Talented female students from year 8 and/or 9. The following students took part in the challenge, Sarah Balmont, Emily Batchelor, Yasmin Belgrave-Warner, Samantha Bosacki, Ellie Davies, Tamsin January, Ana Jessett, Emily Walter and Danielle Wilson. They would join 4 other schools also providing up to 10 female students each.

They were set challenges by:

  • BM, on ways of reducing IBM’s carbon footprint and
  • Proctor and Gamble, on producing a campaign to promote one of their specialist dog food products.

The girls were split into two teams of 25 and started the process of bonding.

Day 1 – Introductions and team building exercises
Day 2 -The company setting the challenge came to “the classroom” and set each groups challenge . The groups had to divide into sub project teams facilitated by the EiA coaches and work on the challenge. This included voting a Chief Executive and Deputy
Day 3 – They continued to work on the challenge
Day 4 – Finalise the presentation and rehearse
Day 5 – Travel to their respective company and the groups presented the results of the Challenge back to the Business “in the Boardroom” . This was followed by a summary and an evaluation where the students reviewed their own learning and skills improvements. All students received a certificate. After the event the students were given lunch and had a chance for informal chats with the companies representatives.

Sport College and School Sports Partnership

Sports Day July 4th 2008
The sun shone down on Therfield on what was the first ‘whole school’ sports day for many years. It was run as a culmination of all the inter-house sport that has been organised by the PE and Sport Faculty this year and gave some of our most able athletes the opportunity to compete in front of a large audience, across the full spectrum of traditional athletic events, some alternative relays and the ever popular tug-of-war! Most importantly however, it was to really celebrate the ‘House spirit’ and sense of community of Therfield, and we did it in style!

Staff dressed in house colours; some preferred the ‘Leithal Lion’ or ‘Polesapart Penguin’ suits, students had ‘war paint’ or ‘pretty glitter’ – depending on their perspective of the day! But all contributed hugely to its success – earning points for their house, cheering on competitors, singing and dancing, helping to officiate, keeping the water supplies stocked, taking photos, clearing up the litter, listening out for their house’s ’winning tune’ and generally enjoying the atmosphere.

A special mention has to go to the record breakers on the day, some of whom broke records set back in 1982 & 1984!
Year 7: Kim Blackwell (100m), Amber Ayton (Shot Putt) Anna Murphy (High Jump), Alice Payne (Triple Jump), Charles Whitlock (Shot Putt)
Year 8: Beth Lloyd (300m), Millie Rowe (Triple Jump), Nathan Bragg (Shot Putt)
Year 9: Leanne Bettis (Discus), Stephen Keen (equalled High Jump)
Year 10: Abi Jones (100m & Triple Jump) Wilson Juma (High Jump)
Some excellent performances, well done!

And now for the results:
7PLW was the winning tutor group, BUT Leith won Year 7 overall.
8LMC came first, but Polesden won Year 8 overall.
9PBA and 10 PBU won their respective year group competition, with Polesden winning overall.
Taken as a whole, final results were Norbury 4th, Juniper 3rd, Leith 2nd & Polesden 1st .
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the day

Leatherhead Life
This year was the third time Therfield has hosted the sports day of Leatherhead Life. With new sponsors and local participation the event saw around 50 children from the local area take part in an afternoon of sport which according to the children and parents was great fun. The children were offered the opportunity to try out six different sports over three hours. These included football, basketball, cricket, tennis, rugby and rounders.

Tennis Academy
This term saw the launch of the “Therfield Tennis Academy” which has been an amazing success. At the start of term we held three weeks of trials which saw around thirty students from Years 7 to 10 come and try out. The standard of the students was very impressive and having selected 10 students we now run a weekly coaching session for them. As from next year we are looking to include a club link into the coaching session which means the players will do two hours after school and a further session at a local club. We are also looking to enter two teams into local tennis competitions within the local area.

The players who were selected for the Academy are Anna Murphy (Yr7), Alice Payne (Yr7), Hollie Montague (Yr7), Max Van Gorkum (Yr7), Billy Barham (Yr7), Matt Benham (Yr8), Dominic Lloyd (Yr8), Beth Lloyd (Yr8), Alex Fennemore (Yr10) and Simon Dean (Yr10)

Chance to Shine
Now in its second year, the “Chance to Shine” programme was again offered out to our sister schools and two secondary schools in the area. Due to its success last year every school was offered a maximum of three hours of coaching per week. The sessions were run by a coach from Ashtead Cricket Club and from the general feedback it has been a complete success.

Also in conjunction with the sports college we have run a very successful Easter Camp with Chance to Shine and at the moment we are gearing up for a further two weeks of summer camps which will take place at Therfield during the first two weeks of the Summer Holidays.

Total Football
We have just finished the 3rd and final Total Football series for this school year. A very successful project taking place on a Friday night, on the Therfield astroturf, 8-10pm. It is a football competition where players, ranging from school years 7-11, come and play in teams of 7 against other teams. Points gained from each week get added to an overall table and then the top 4 teams after 7 weeks go through to the ‘finals night’ on the 8th week. The winning teams of the league stage and of the finals night both receive winners medals.

The night is overseen and run by Community Sports staff and volunteers from the Leatherhead community and further a field. It is the plan and vision of the Sports College to develop the 6th form students by training and equipping them in the area of our community projects. Students will be mentored in the area of coaching, project management and admin duties. This will also create a self sustainable pool of volunteers from within the school.

The project was originally setup and the vision continues to be to provide an opportunity to play football in a safe environment to secondary ages. The running and management of the project is designed to give the players a positive and fun experience.

Total Basketball
The little brother of Total Football but with a different structure. The project is aimed at school years 3-6 and 7&8. On a Wednesday evening in the sports hall of Therfield School, 5-6pm is for primary age and then 6-7pm is for the older age. Players are coached techniques and skills of basketball and are then encouraged to apply the learnt techniques and skills in mini 3v3 matches. Twelve young people take part every week but plans are underway to expand the project which will allow it to reach its potential.

Mend Project
This is a project designed to tackle obesity in school children between the ages of 7 -13. The course is designed and run by Youth Sport Trust, Sainsbury’s supermarkets and MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!). Developed at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for children and the Institute of Child Health, University College London, the MEND Programme helps overweight and obese children and their families to improve their health and wellbeing.

Therfield School is pleased to provide facilities and sports coaching for the project making it the main MEND centre for the Leatherhead area. The project runs over 9 weeks, with two sessions each week on a Tuesday and Thursday between 4.30-6.30pm. The first hour is for diet and nutrition education and the second hour is for physical exercise. The project has now finished its third cycle and was fully booked for the first time. Six families completed the project in total, if you are interested in taking part in the project in 2008/9 please email sportscollege@lhead.therfield.surrey.sch.uk

Therfield Summer Sports Camp 2008
After the success of the 2008 Easter Sports Camp the Community Sports Team is pleased to announce that there will be Summer Sports Camp. Running in the first two weeks of the summer holidays from Monday 28th July to August 8th 2008 the camp is for primary school years 3-6 (Age 7-11) running from 9am-3pm daily. The camp is run by experienced, qualified, professional coaches and to book your child in for one week is just £50 or £12 for individual day bookings. BLF-Boxing
Boxing at Therfield has been taking place for 2 years now. It has just started to see more pupils getting involved again. Ed Semple from Sleeping Storm in Epsom comes in every Tuesday (and Wednesday for Judo) and currently coaches around 6-10 pupils. All the pupils who attend thoroughly enjoy this lunchtime event. Punch bags will also soon be going up in the gym so watch this space. If you are interested in joining either go to the sports hall at the beginning of lunch on a Tuesday or see Miss Warman.

Primary School Beijing Olympics Festival 30th June and 3rd July
On Monday 30th June and 3rd July 120 pupils from Trinity and Royal Kent came to Therfield for a festival which was organised, planned and led by the year 12s. These Year 12s included Robyn Fox, James Crow, Nick Butchers, Michael Rogers, Graeme Vardon, Alex Cooper, Tim Everard, Sean Pink, Max Wright, Matt Lee, Phil Morris and Craig Gale.

On the Monday the year 12 pupils led year 1s and 2s from Trinity and Royal Kent who were accompanied by some year 8s and year 9s through a variety of different sporting events including javelin, discus, standing broad jump, sprinting, hurdles, throwing and catching, obstacles and relay. This was also the same for the Thursday however 120 year 3s and 4s attended from Trinity and were accompanied by year 10s.

Both days were really well organised and a fantastic achievement for all pupils involved. Luckily the rain stayed away so the pupils stayed dry apart from a little on the Thursday. Well done to a Royal Kent pupil for winning overall performer on the Monday and Trinity for winning first place for both teams on Monday and Thursday.

Very well done to the year 12s, hopefully it will be as good next year!

Therfield’s Mid Surrey Sports Partnership Highlight’s for 2007/08
The sports partnership is made up of 71 Schools across Mole Valley and Guildford with Therfield as the hub site. School Sports Partnerships target 5 hours of PE and School Sport for 2011. The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that the School Sport Partnership Network would be funded through to 2011. In addition to this good news, there will be a total of £100m additional funding to contribute towards the following areas;

  • Providing Surrey with 3 new Competition Managers, who will help coordinate inter-school sport across the County. Wendy Newton is the new Senior CM, and has been joined by Beth Andrew (based here at Therfield) and Dan Feist as CM’s. The CM team are already hard at work putting together a competition plan for the County ready for next year.
  • New Sports Co-ordinators in every Further Education College to target the 16 to 18 year age group. We will be working with Guildford College, who have three campuses across the County, including some fantastic specialist sports facilities at their Merrist Wood campus
  • Funding for additional Coaches to deliver out of school hours learning. The new coaching funding will be available from September 2008, and we are in the process of identifying which sports would be popular with pupils.
  • Helping to deliver extended activities to Partnership schools, both during the curriculum and after school. There are 5 activities funded through this programme in the Mole Valley area, including Dance, Rugby, Badminton and an Adventure Club.
  • Ensuring that school sport and PE is inclusive for all pupils, both disabled and able bodied. Our Partnership will soon be part of the ‘Playground to Podium’ programme that is aiming to identify young people with disabilities who have the talent to progress in sport, perhaps even as far as representing Great Britain at the 2012 Paralympic Games!

The additional funding will help school partnerships move towards a new national target of providing FIVE hours of PE and school Sport for every pupil aged 5 to 16 by 2011. This new goal comes on the back of news that the existing national target of 2 hours of PE and School sport for 85% of 5 to 16 year olds had been met a year early – an amazing achievement by SSCo’s, PLT’s and all colleagues in schools across the country.

Young Ambassadors Lead the Way to 2012
Over the course of the last year 10 young leaders from across the partnership have been acting a Young Ambassadors, aiming to promote sport, physical education and healthy living to build on the excitement of the London 2012 Games.

The lead YAs for our areas have been Ali McQueen of Christ’s College and Jordan Belgrave Warner of Therfield School, but they have been working alongside students from all of the other seciondary school sin the partnership, meeting challenges, acting as role models to inspire other young people to get involved in sport, visiting primary schools and helping to select next years intake of YAs.

The Young Ambassadors are Ali McQueen, Jordan Belgrave-Warner, Lea Benn, Alex Mackie, Oscar Richards, Natasha Willett, Emily Napier, Jack Bookham, Ellie McWilliam and Greg Cackett. Thanks to all of them for efforts other the past year, I hope that they can all stay involved as Mentors to the new YAs who will take ion the role next year. Thanks also to SSCo Duncan Thompson for his hard work in co-ordinating the programme for the Partnership.

Mid Surrey SSP wins County award
Mid Surrey SSP is now the proud owner of a trophy and certificate proclaiming it the winner of the Surrey Sports Awards 2007, in the category ‘Sporting impact & Innovation in Schools’ which was sponsored by Bishops Sports and Leisure.

The Partnership won the award for running a programme of ‘B’ team fixtures and tournaments for secondary school pupils across the Guildford area. Andy Morrison, SSCo for the George Abbot and St Peter’s school families in Guildford, was on hand to collect the award on behalf of the Guildford SSCo’s (see picture).

Andy explained; “Often pupils don’t get the chance to represent their school at sport when they move from primary to secondary school, which can result in them drifting away from after school sports clubs as well. We have been really pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the children at the ‘B’ team fixtures and tournaments, and are also grateful for the support shown by the PE Department staff at the partnership secondary schools in Guildford.”

Congratulations to all the Guildford SSCo’s for their hard work on this, and to all the pupils who have represented their schools at ‘B’ team fixtures and tournaments. Here’s looking forward to this being the first of many awards for Mid Surrey SSP!

Inter and Intra school Competition on the increase
This past year has seen many different events run across our partnership area, here are just a few of the highlights:

  • Twelve Year 12 pupils at Guildford County School, supported by sixty Year 10 pupils on the Level 1 sports leaders award who have volunteered to umpire or referee in their own time, have organized and run 10 Inter Form tournaments for KS3 pupils with sports on offer ranging from Netball and Basketball to Football and Rugby.
  • Early in October 2007, King George V Playing Fields in Effingham was swamped with more than 200 Year 1 children from 6 local primary and infant schools as School Sports Coordinator Matt Kemp held a 5-a-side football fun-day.
  • 140 Yr 5 and 6 pupils from across Leatherhead and Ashtead took part in a Hockey Festival at Therfield school, and enjoyed coaching sessions from Lesley McIntosh, the County Hockey Development Officer
  • More then 300 Infant and Primary pupils from the Kings College Family of schools took part in an Olympic themed activity week at the school, which was organised and lead by more than 70 yr 9 and 10 volunteers from Kings. The activity was so successful that it has been put forward for an award.
  • Festivals for Infant and Primary students have also been held at The Priory, The Ashcombe, George Abbot, St Peter’s, Howard of Effingham and Christ’s College School’s. All of these have been organised by the local School Sport Co-ordinator, but they would not be able to go ahead with out the help of Young Leaders from the schools involved.

Thank you and well done to all students that have helped at a festival or school club this year, your efforts are very much appreciated.

More activities for Young People
The Big Lottery has funded 2 very successful clubs this year at The Priory School. 14 boys have taken part in a Judo club run by a coach from Sleeping Storm martial arts academy. They have enjoyed it so much they want to get a club set up at the school.

In addition to this, 21 year 11 girls have been attending a lunchtime dance club aimed at motivating girls who do not particularly enjoy team sports and PE to be more active. The girls have really enjoyed this club and would love to see dance in the curriculum.

The Big Lottery Funded Positive Playground scheme is now running well in 13 Mole Valley Schools. SSCo Carolyn Stowell has had a lot of positive feedback from schools particularly in the improvement in the behaviour of children at lunchtimes, the more active involvement of all children (particularly the children from our target groups) and the positive contribution of our year 6 and year 2 Play Leaders.

Year 10 and 11 boys from five secondary schools in Guildford have had the opportunity to take part in Martial Arts activities, thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund (BLF).

Training for teachers
A very successful PLT conference was held on June 17th at the Manor House Hotel in Newlands Cross. More than 40 staff attended a morning session run by Clayton Wilson, the County PE Consultant for 4S, who delivered a presentation covering assessment for PE and Gifted and Talented Learners.

In addition to the conference, the Partnerhsip also ran successful CPD for Gymnastics, Dance, Leadership Tutor training, Poolside helpers, Huff ‘n’ Puff, Tennis and Hockey.

Ugandan pen pal links

This term several year 8 and Year 10 students have written to students at our link school Lords Meade Vocational College in Uganda. We are very excited about receiving replies and developing pen pal friendships. We hope that next year students from Therfield School will have the opportunity to visit Uganda to meet their pen pal. Watch this space…

If you would like to find out more about the link with Lords Meade School please visit our website or alternatively visit www.lordsmeade.org

Geography

Year 7 Trip to Westhumble
On 16th and 17th June Year 7 went to put their geographical skills to the test. They identified and measured ox bow lakes, river terraces and meanders and practiced field sketching of flood plains. Some of the students got their wellies out and measured aspects of the River Mole and conducted kick sampling techniques to investigate creatures which live in the river. We were very lucky with the glorious weather and an enjoyable time was had by all.

RS

Year 7 RS Trip
On Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th all the Year 7s went on an RS trip. We visited Ripley church, Weybridge synagogue and Woking mosque. At Ripley Church we had a talk from the vicar about the church which included when it was built etc. We were also told that Eric Clapton's son was buried there. One of the main features of this church was the number of stained glass windows which were really beautiful. We were able to ask lots of questions about the church and what it is like there.

The Year 7s then went to a synagogue. Before they went in the boys had to cover their heads with a skull cap. When they were inside the Year 7s were shown the Torah Scrolls and then a few pupils were given a chance to blow on a horn.

Finally, we went to the Mosque. Before entering the mosque we had to take off our shoes. When inside the mosque we were given a quick talk about the mosque and what takes place. The thing they were told about the most by the Imam was that they had to pray five times a day. Muslims believe that this is the most important part of their religion.

Leith and Juniper who went on Tuesday were then given the opportunity to watch one of the prayers at lunchtime. It was incredible how many men came to the mosque to pray and we were all fascinated! We were then able to ask questions again and we learnt why we had to take our shoes off and why there were no women at the mosque.

Everyone learnt a lot from this trip and found it very rewarding. We may never get the chance to go to a mosque or synagogue again and it really helped us understand these different religions, and actually how similar they all are as well. A big thank you to all the teachers who helped on this trip, especially to Miss Wheeler who organised it.

History
“Lessons from Auschwitz” project
The Holocaust Educational Trust and the British government have given funding for all schools in Britain for two students to visit the Auschwitz death camp in Poland and attend two seminars with experts. This “Lessons from Auschwitz” project enable students to explore the nature and the impact of the Holocaust. Because there are only two places, students had to explain in a letter their reasons for wanting to go. We are delighted to announce the winning students are Fran Hughes and Sarah Cannon in Year 12. After they have been, they will lead assemblies, explaining what lessons they have learnt.

“How can I change my community” session
As part of their GCSE Citizenship coursework, all Year 9 tutor groups planned and delivered a session to a Year 7 tutor group in their house on an issue they thought was important. The issues spanned from Racism to Healthy Eating, from Alcohol to Bullying. The sessions were run during the House Days and were a great success, both year groups learnt a lot and enjoying the process.

MFL

Arsenal FC link up with MFL!
Over the summer term about 30 Year 9 students have been participating in the Arsenal FC Double Cup scheme. With the help of two professional coaches supplied by Arsenal, the lucky pupils have been taking part in weekly football training sessions as well as learning more French and German by following Arsenal’s football languages course. The participants do a 45 minute training session on the playing fields followed by 45 minutes of football language in either French or German in class, thus the term “Double Cup”. Both boys and girls have been taking part and gained a place on the course by competing for participation points in normal languages lessons; the top ten in each class then qualified to take part over six weeks in June and July.

Football skills that have been improved include passing, heading, penalty taking and target shooting. The course will be followed up with a trip to the Emirates Stadium in the Autumn Term when the pupils will be able to take a stadium tour and visit the Arsenal Museum. Pupils who have taken part have been enthusiastic about the football as well as the languages learning resources that accompany the course.

Ready to Learn

During the summer as you prepare for the new school year in September, please encourage your sons and daughters to be ready to learn. This will include bringing the equipment they need for their lessons and wearing full school uniform. Regarding uniform, please be aware that trainers (unless during sport) and “hoodies” are not allowed.

SATs Results

As you may be aware there as been a delay in schools being able to access their key stage 3 test results. Therfield were unable to access any of their SATs results until Friday 18th July and then it was only most of mathematics and science that were available, English had not been released by then .
