THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.16, January 1995

I am pleased to report that Surrey County Council has agreed to provide an additional £168,000 to meet the accommodation requirements of the school which continues to be oversubscribed. This means that work will soon start on a new Sixth Form block and a large extension to the Dining Hall. The existing Sixth Form block will be adapted to provide extra teaching space and measures will be taken to ease congestion in the corridors and provide additional changing rooms and showers.

Therfield's OFSTED inspection takes place during the week of March 27th. During this time 13 inspectors are in the school assessing us from all angles. A meeting for parents giving you more information about OFSTED will be held on March 9th at 8 p.m.

Peter Polycarpou proved to be a popular guest at Presentation Evening on January 6th. He confessed to being nervous but was delighted by the enthusiastic reception he received. We are most grateful for the time and trouble he took - particularly as he was still signing autographs and chatting to pupils after 10 p.m.!! Once again we were gratified to see the large number of pupils who chose to receive their awards and certificates at the evening .

We welcome Julie Steel to the Drama department . She grew up in Essex and trained in dance from the age of 3 . She started drama at the age of six and studied for LAMDA examinations in acting and speech and quickly became involved in local amateur dance shows and operatic groups. After working with various youth groups doing the choreography and directing shows, she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has devised, directed and performed in a number of productions, including Theatre in Education work.

They arranged transport, decorated the hall, canvassed for raffle prizes, provided refreshments and entertainment and worked extremely hard.
