Issue No.152, March 2007
| FROM THE HEADTEACHER Mrs
Susan Willman
This term we held a very successful Spring Concert. Many thanks to everyone who contributed. There was an enthusiastic response from both parents and guests and it was great to see so many students involved . Well done to the Year 8 and Year 13 teams who reached the finals of the Surrey SATRO problem Solving Challenge. Our teams made a brave attempt but were foiled by some wayward polo mints! We wish good luck to the 4 students from Year 8 and Year 9 who are going to Croydon to participate in the UK M.T. Team Maths Challenge Regional Final . Congratulations to Duncan Stuart, Jordan Belgrave Warner and George Brooks in Year 10 and Chris Knight in Year 9 who all gained a place in the European Kangaroo Maths Challenge after achieving high enough marks in the UK Tournament. Amongst the rest of the students we gained 7 gold, 6 silver and 14 bronze awards. I wish you all a very good Easter Holidays. YOUNG ENTERPRISE TROPHY COMES TO THERFIELD On Thursday 15th March, a number of Therfield School Year 12 students entered two Young Enterprise Companies into the East Surrey Area Competition. Young Enterprise is an organisation that gives students the opportunity to launch their own company and learn more about the business world first hand. Each company had spent the preceding weeks preparing a report, trade stand and a five minute presentation. Many of the schools in the East Surrey area attended Caterham School to showcase their work and Therfield was up against stiff competition from Private and State schools alike. In total 15 companies attended the evening. Representing their teams and Therfield School were Collars and Cuffs (Emma-Jean Callaghan, James Chouls, Emily Relton and James Bottomley) which had sold personalised sports shirts with the Therfield logo and Kreate (Toby Edwards, Gemma Barker, Penny Smith, Bonnie Veit and Simon Morris), which had sold cards and small gifts. Key to the success of these companies was the production of a professional report, trade stand and a five minute presentation in front of a large audience and the ever-important judges! Both teams spent many hours not only running their business but also in preparation for this event. Those that didn’t present at the awards were an integral part of getting the job done and the teamwork in both teams was magnificent. They have experienced the trials, frustrations and rewards of running a business and have learned that making money is not as easy as it sounds! Despite the huge learning curves, long hours and hitting some major obstacles on their way, both teams have successfully made profit which will go towards the sixth form charity target. Each team performed superb presentations which were co-ordinated and professional. Moreover, there were no notes or prompt cards in sight! One of Therfield’s teams, Kreate, wowed the judges as each company presenter delivered their polished speeches to a slick slideshow while the audience listened intently. The Judges were so impressed that they awarded Kreate with the Best Presentation prize of £100. Kreate went on to win the prestigious East Surrey Young Enterprise Company prize for their combined efforts and received their silver trophy presented by Mark Blair, one of the judges. As one judge stated, “the award goes to the team who produced consistently good quality across all three requirements, the report, the presentation and the trade stand.” All Young Enterprise members were ecstatic at the news along with their link teacher, Ms Sykes and advisors Ian Jewell and Harish Bhayani. Kreate will now go on to compete at the Surrey Competition on 17th May at the University of Surrey. Congratulations and best of luck to ALL the team members across the two teams. RAMBERT DANCE WORKSHOP Rambert Dance Company ran a 3 hour contemporary dance workshop for yrs 10 & 11 GCSE Dance students. 25 students were involved. They worked on technique, choreography & phrases from some of Ramberts repertoire. From this workshop the students were able to create a performance piece for their exam this year. The workshop cost £200 but was covered by the sports college ‘Girls in Sport’ initiative where substantial funding has been used to support the development of girls PE and sport at Therfield. THERFIELD SCHOOL DANCE SHOWCASE On Thursday March 29th Mrs Woodroffe in the PE dept is holding a Dance showcase, the first of its kind evolving from what was the gym & dance display. INTERNATIONAL NETBALL – ENGLAND vs SOUTH AFRICA Mrs Woodroffe, Miss Nicholls & Miss Warman took 30 girls from the netball squad to Wembley Arena to watch international netball England vs South Africa. It was an excellent evening in which all the girls thoroughly enjoyed watching a live international sporting event. England was strong and held a lead from the beginning, winning the match and the test series overall. YEAR 7 ROTTEN ROMAN THEATRE TRIP On the 28th February 50 lucky year students went to see the Horrible Histories Ruthless Romans performance at the New Wimbledon Theatre, London. The teachers that gave up their evening for the students were Miss Wheeler, Miss Jackson, Miss Cortizo, Mr Mitchelmore and Mr Coy. It took the students and teachers approximately 40 minutes to arrive at the theatre by coach. The actual performance was started with a company called Vito’s Voyages, then there was an explorer and his assistant. There was also a lady called Maisie. They explained how horrible the Romans were in a funny way. After the interval there were some stunning 3D effects, done by “Bogglevision”. All in all it was a superb experience and it taught us a lot about the Rotten Romans. By Spencer Long and Ryan Taylor 7JME. U18 GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM REACH THE FINALS!! Therfield is proud to announce that the U18 Girls football team have reached the finals of the English Schools Cup due to be held at the Exeter City Football ground on Tuesday 8th May. This is the first time we have entered this competition. The team has worked their way through 5 knock out rounds and a semi-final. The semi-final was against Filton College, partnered with the Bristol Football Academy. Our team was Alisha Phillips, Georgie Giddings, Amie Turner, Jade Dempster, Daisy Smith, Katrina Fidler, Jo Morris, Jenny Banfield, Vicky Vickery, Alice Wheeler, Shannon Cambridge, Siobhan Ridout, Christine Smith & Lindsey Surgue-Murphy. The semi-final match was held at Therfield, during a lunchtime break, which allowed for some great support from over 100 students, helping to create a wonderful atmosphere! Therfield went 1-0 down early in the first half from a speculative shot from the Bristol midfield, which proved to be Filton's only real moment of threat. Vicky scored in the first half to bring the first half to a close at 1-1. Shortly into the second half Jenny scored. Vicky had a tremendous shot from the 18yard box, beating the keeper, but to be saved by the central defender, giving away a penalty. Jenny then converted this into another goal for the team with final score being 3-1 to Therfield. Our congratulations go to all the team for their hard work and commitment and wish them every success in the final. Come on Therfield!
SURREY SATRO PROBLEM SOLVING CHALLENGE On Thursday 1st March, three teams from Therfield entered a problem solving challenge held by Surrey SATRO in Weybridge, representing the Science and Design Technology Departments. Our Year 8 team comprising of Ambrose Fullalove, George Bayman, James Lowe, Josh Whitwell and Robbie Brown won the Year 7-9 category by over 50 points. Our Year 11 team Alex Mikheeva, Ellis Devonshire, Thomas Ball, Matt Major, Conrad Honey and Martyn Carter came third, narrowly missing second place by only 4 points.
