THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.144, June 2006

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

I am delighted to announce that Therfield have received a certificate from The Good Schools Guide for the best results achieved at A Level by girls taking History at a non-selective state school. This is testament to the tremendous work that our History department do.

I am also pleased to announce that the winning production of Grimm Tales performed by Year 10 students from Therfield School in the recent Michael Caine Leatherhead Drama Festival has achieved some of the highest marks nationally, placing them in the top three of the U21 category and have been invited to the National Drama Awards. They will now compete in the National final on 26th July at the Rhoda McGraw Theatre, Woking. We are the only school group performing and will be up against Wessex Youth Theatre and Runnymede D.G. Youth Workshop.

Tickets for the evening are available at £8 or £6 for concessions by either telephoning the box office on 01932 336589 or by going to tickets@wokingallwinners.co.uk

Getting Animated Therfield is lucky enough to be one of only a handful of Surrey schools selected to take part in an Animation project with University College for the Creative Arts at Farnham. Farnham is the national animation research centre and five Year 10 students are currently involved in a project learning animation techniques, working with animators both in school and at the University. These students are: Eli Green (10PCR), Michael Young (10PJA), Connie Deans (10PCR), Tom Nunn (10PCR) and Amy Nick (10LHO).

The project will benefit all Year 10 Art students, as the chosen five will be running sessions in class to pass on what they have learnt. The Art Department intends to make animation a key feature of KS3 art projects in the future, so that all art students will eventually benefit from this excellent experience.

Pasta Challenge For the second successful year the Food Technology Department and the school canteen have worked together on the 'Pasta Challenge' as part of the Healthy Eating in Schools Campaign. Year 8 students have been busy planning and preparing their own pasta recipes. Winners of the first phase are Daniel Rossell, Danny Amos, Georgina Bland and William Bailey.

This year the challenge has been supported by Waitrose, Cobham, and the winning students were presented with their gift vouchers by Jennie Sanders, Department Manager at Waitrose. Also present were the judges, Miss Mary Shipley, Commercial Manager for the School Meals in Surrey and Mrs Christine Stedman, the Canteen Manager. Winners now have the opportunity for their pasta dishes to be prepared and served in the school canteen.

Vouchers

Sainsbury's have announced that they have extended their collection period. If you have any vouchers hanging around then please send them into school by 21st July. Help us race to the finish line

Tesco Vouchers - Thank you to all parents and students who helped by bringing their Tesco vouchers from home. These will be put towards much needed Information Technology equipment for the school. If you still find some under the sofa or in the creases of pockets please continue to bring them to the school as the deadline for them to be counted is 5th July.

You can now pay online for school meals Since 29th May 2004 Surrey County Council has been taking online school meals payments at over 150 primary, infant and nursery schools in Surrey. Now they are offering this service at secondary schools and Therfield is pleased to be one of the first secondary schools in Surrey to take up this initiative.

This system enables you to make school meal payments by entering the Surrey County Council website and filling in the information required - no more hunting for change or writing a cheque at 7.30am on a Monday morning! The secure payment system is provided by WorldPay, which the council uses for all e-shop transactions and which takes all major debit and credit cards.

A separate letter with instructions on how to use this new payment method attached has been sent to you today via the student post. If you have any queries about using this system please contact the Main Office at school, or take a look at the screens at www.surreycc.gov.uk/schoolmeals

Heart For Romania Therfield has donated ten computers to the charity Heart For Romania. This is a Christian organisation with volunteers from a wide variety of churches and backgrounds, which has been helping out in Romania for the past fifteen years during which time many students from Therfield have been involved. The charity is aiming to set up a community centre for which they have been given a building. It will have a number of uses, these include running a youth club, a coffee shop, a sports and activities centre and setting up an IT room where they will be able to have basic training and internet access. The donated computers are no longer able to run the updated software that Therfield now uses but are ideal for what the charity is aiming to do.

We will give updates on how the project is going in future issues.
