THERFIELD NEWS Issue No.136, Fri 21 Oct 2005

FROM THE HEADTEACHER

On Wednesday 12th October the school had over 1000 visitors. The reason? Our Open Evening for Prospective Parents. As always, there was a terrific buzz, with Departments and clubs displaying just some of the work that they have been engaged in over the last year. Visitors were treated to such delights as the roving Samba band, pizza tastings, dance displays, basketball sessions and 'hands-on' activities in the Maths, DT, ICT and Art Departments.

Prospective parents and their children also had the opportunity to see the school at work during our daytime tours. Following a brief presentation, Sixth Form students accompanied groups around the school while answering any questions that parents or children had about the aspects of daily life at Therfield. This was then followed by refreshments where members of the Leadership Team were on hand if parents wished to talk on a one-to-one basis.

The feedback from parents taking this tour has been extremely positive and a big thank-you must go to all the Sixth Formers who helped.

Wednesday 12th October was also a landmark day for Therfield when we heard that planning permission has been granted for our new building project. This is terrific news as we will be able to start work in the very near future. At last we can say goodbye to our twelve year old, temporary huts!

Thank you to all parents who attended our Governors' and Friends' Annual meetings. Copies of the Governors' Annual Report are available from the Main Office or on-line from the school website or by clicking Governors' Annual Report 2005.

Congratulations
We are delighted that Gareth Thomas in Year 10 has been selected to represent Great Britain in the U17 Mens' Epée competition in Bonn for the weekends of 11th Nov and again on the 10th December. This is a remarkable achievement for Gareth as over 200 people will be competing from all over Europe. We wish Gareth the very best of luck in the competitions

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust ran a competition for students throughout the country to come up with safety tips and slogans for a new campaign. The aim was to get safety advice over to boys and young men about how to avoid violence and aggression on the streets. Matt Davison (8NLE) entered with the slogan The Streets Deserve Respect. This was liked so much that it has been chosen as the name for the whole campaign.

The other winning entry was from Sam Alexander (8NLE) whose slogan Drugs and Knives both cut lives has now been illustrated and appears on posters in secondary schools. To find out more about the campaign you can log onto www.personalsafetyday.org

School Trips
On Monday, 26th September 13 A2 Biology students accompanied by Mr Williams and Miss Myers descended on Pagham Harbour. As part of their Ecology studies the students were asked to carry out investigative studies on the flora of the salt marsh and shingle. They were also prompted to make their own observations.

On Tuesday they visited an SSSI wet heathland at Tilford Heath, an internationally important environment. Here they looked at conservation management and various ecological techniques that could be employed the following day.

The students prepared and planned their own ecological investigations overnight and on Wednesday morning the minibus returned them to Pagham. Armed with wellingtons, quadrats, tapes, poles and rulers the students attacked their projects with total commitment. Students were seen leaping over muddy creeks like gazelles; they were observed face down in the creeks being held by their belts retrieving equipment from the mud. They counted and measured endless glasswort and sea asters, took mud samples, pH, salinity readings etc all in an attempt to explain the distribution of the flora.

"It was hilarious when Danny H got stuck in the mud and emerged minus one welly" said one student, "The weather was great - the only time it rained most of us were in the bus, shame" another explained!

As part of the Year 12 AS Geography course students were taken to Brighton. In Brighton itself they carried out various exercises which form part of the Human Geography aspect of the course. The rest of the time was spent looking at the Physical element which entailed a day on the beach measuring pebbles! Fortunately they had excellent weather.

Prizes
The PE department are running a new scheme to promote participation at extra-curricular activities. Every time a student attends a Sports Club or represents the school they will receive a 'stamp' in a Clubs book. At the end of each term these will be exchanged for tickets in the Sports College raffle. Prizes will include sports equipment, clothing and gift vouchers. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend at least one of the many extra-curricular clubs and to collect their Clubs book.

The Science department is running a competition in conjunction with Exxon Mobil. Up for grabs are a Mini ipod, digital camera and WH Smith vouchers. To have a chance of winning one of these exciting prizes students must see Miss Clement in A7 for further details.
