FROM THE HEADTEACHER
Thank you to all those parents who attended the Governors' Annual Meeting for parents. It was a very lively and positive meeting. Copies of the annual report are available from the Main Office at school. A big thank you also to all those students who helped at this years Prospective Parents Evening, you were great ambassadors for the school and all the feedback received has been extremely positive. A key aspect of raising funds for the school is the work undertaken by The Friends of Therfield. I would encourage all parents to support their work wherever possible, as the events are a great way to socialise with others, have fun, and raise money at the same time. NEW PARENT GOVERNORS We had an excellent response to our recent request for norrunations for Parent Governor. The newly appointed governors are: Barbara Walton, David Knoyle, Michael J. Smith, Kalpana Carruthers and Gary Potter. They may be contacted via the Clerk to the Governors at the School. The Governing Body elected Mr David Crutchley to be Chair and Mrs Paula Scriven and Mrs Lynn Pendlebury were appointed joint Vice Chairs - all posts are for a one year period. Dates and times to note School will close at 3.15pm on 10th November, 24th November and 15th December due to Year 8 parents' evening, the Sixth Form Open Evening and Year 13 parents' evening. Friday 19th November is Academic Tutoring day when students attend, in uniform please, for their individual appointments with their tutors. Monday 22nd November is an INSET day when students are not in school. Brighton Trips Year 12 Brighton field trip: On 7th and 8th October Year 12 Geography students travelled down to Brighton. Beach profiles, pebble sizes and long shore drift where investigated on the shingle beach. In the town environment quality surveys and questionnaires where conducted. The weather was glorious and the students hard working. Two successful days were had by all! Duke of Edinburgh Update 64 students and 14 staff took part in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition on the North Downs over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd October. Despite the poor weather the students successfully completed their long walks. Some students still need to complete their service, skills and physical sections by the end of term. Students also have to write up their projects about the expedition. Once all these tasks have been completed they will qualify for their award and will attend the Award Ceremony in January. Our first ever Gold expedition is just about to take place when students and staff will be spending the weekend on Dartmoor. Looking at the Sixth Form An opportunity to find out what our Sixth Form has to offer will be given at our Open Evening on 24th November. The evening will start at 6.30pm. Students in Year 11 and their parents are invited to come along and hear presentations by the Headteacher and Miss Allen, Assistant Head of Sixth Form. There will also be an opportunity to talk to subject staff. Over 70% of students choose to stay on and continue their studies here and we offer AS, A2, AVCE and GNVQ courses. If you know of anyone who is seeking a change of school Post 16 please tell them about Therfield and recommend that they come along on 24`b November at 6.30pm. They and you will be very welcome. The National Cypher Challenge This challenge is run by Southampton University and will finish in January. Students have been set a series of complex ciphers to decode with each being harder than the last. Adam Francis (12HD) and Richard Willcox (12SY) are doing brilliantly as they are currently in 145th place out of 750 entries. Senior Maths Challenge This will take place on 9th November. This is an event that students at Therfield have always done very well at, achieving many Gold awards. Maths Exams A reminder that AS/A2 Modular maths exams take place on Tuesday 2nd November. Poetic Maths The Maths faculty held a year 7 Maths poetry competition for National Poetry day on 7th October. The winners of the year 7 poetry

Science Exams Year 10 Modular exams will take place on Thursday 18'b November. Revision guides and workbooks for both Higher and Foundation papers are available from the Science department at a cost of £5 for the guide/workbook combination. Report on the Littleton Regatta The last Regatta of the sailing season was held on Saturday 2nd October at Littleton Sailing club near Chertsey. It was a blustery day with showers and increasing wind, and by the afternoon the wind was gusting to Force 6 and many competitors capsized in the 3rd race. The committee then took the decision to abandon the 4th race. The Therfield team of 6 boats performed very well with Alex Stypulkowski and Ian Sherriffs picking up a trophy. Enterprise Class - Commodore's
Trophy PE Roundup Rugby - Year 10 progressed to round 2 of the Daily Mail Plate competition by beating Broadwater school 27 - 7. Football Year 7 made
an excellent start this season with their best result being a
win against Carshalton Sports College 5 - 1. Netball - Congratulations to Lucy Smith who has gained a place in the Surrey U16 squad. This is the squad for the age group above her own. David Beckham Yes David Beckham is up for grabs at the Outward Bound Auction Evening, his signature is among the many prizes that will be auctioned off to raise funds for this trip. Following on from the success of the last auction this one will be held at Therfield on Friday 3rd December at 7.30pm This is a very enjoyable evening so pop the date into your diary now. Medical Update Parents of Year 9 students - Due to an error on the part of the NHS you should not have received the forms regarding Diptetpolio immunisation. Please destroy your form if you have not yet returned it to the school. Any forms we have received will be destroyed. Year 9 students will be getting details through regarding BCG jabs later in the year. Year 10 parents will soon be receiving forms for the Diptetpolio immunisation. Parent Contact Details Please inform the school immediately there is any change to your personal data so that we can update our records. This information is used by us if we need to contact you for any reason. School Photographs Please note that students will be bringing home proofs of their school photographs. If you wish to purchase the photographs please return the proofs with payment promptly to the school Finance Office. Book Fair There will be a one week Book Fair in the Resource Centre starting Wednesday 17th November and finishing on Wednesday 24th November. The Book Fair is open for purchases at break and lunch times, and after school up to 5pm. Classes can be brought in by arrangement. Lots of books for everyone to buy. Please remember, cash, cheques,
credit and debit cards are accepted. Thank you from the Friends Many thanks to all who supported the Jumble Sale in any way. We raised a superb £1046 which will all be donated to school funds. Friends' Ball There is still time to get your tickets to the Friends Ball which takes place on Saturday 11th December. Tickets are £40 and include a three course dinner, entertainment and dancing. You can book tables of 8 and 10 or come on your own and join another table. This is always a very enjoyable occasion. Shoeboxes for Romania Can I say a massive thank you to all those who very kindly donated a shoebox for a family in Romania this Christmas. I have been absolutely overwhelmed by your generosity which will be so much appreciated by those who receive them.
