Dear Parents

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the school and working with us so positively to ensure the success of your sons and daughters.

Although I wrote to you recently about Swine Flu and reported that we had a confirmed case, the whole school community has responded to this in a calm and responsible manner and so far it has had little impact on the day to day life of the school. Absences have been up very slightly but generally business has continued as usual. We will be receiving updates from the Local Authority during the summer holidays and fully expect to begin the term as normal in September.

We say farewell to 3 very long serving members of staff at the end of this term: Alun Thomas who has been at Therfield for 37 years, the last 2 years part-time, making an enormous contribution to Therfield as Head of Year 7 and maths teacher, and Christine Robin who has encouraged and inspired many young artists in her 31 years at Therfield.

Deputy Headteacher Steve Hill has been at Therfield for 28 years and has decided to relocate to Suffolk and pursue new interests. Steve has held a number of posts at Therfield, including Head of PE, Head of Sixth Form, Assistant Headteacher and in recent years Deputy Headteacher. His contribution to Therfield is immeasurable. He has had an enormously positive and long lasting impact on thousands of families in our community. Steve has worked tirelessly, inspiring, chivvying and chasing students to ensure that they reached their potential. Staff, parents and students have all valued his support and sound advice. Steve has been an inspiration to many students and staff, and I am sure will continue to be in whatever he takes on in the future.

I hope that you and your families have a very happy and Newsletter relaxing break over the summer.

Headteacher

Ready to Learn
Please make sure that students are equipped properly for School as this has an effect on the class. To have the correct stationary and uniform enables classes to run smoothly and ensures that they are ‘ready to learn’ as they enter the class room. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Young Enterprise
We have had two very successful Business Days this term – Young Enterprise ran their ‘Sell for Success’ Event on 19 June and 55 Business Studies students plus 6 Gifted and Talented girls took part in the Rydens Business day. As ever the students worked together very productively and came up with some innovative game console product ideas. They put together very credible business plans. The feedback on the day was very positive and all enjoyed the challenge and pressure of working to tight deadlines.

On 6 July Yr 10 Business students worked with Unilever on a Marketing Challenge to increase demand for ice-cream from teenagers. Again they worked in teams of 8 to create new product ideas and develop a marketing plan to launch the new product. The employees from Unilever were very impressed with the innovative ideas that our students came up with. They remarked that our students were incredibly focused and excellent team players. All thoroughly enjoyed the event which was held over 4 lessons in the main hall and concluded with them presenting their ideas to 4 people from the marketing and sales team at Unilever. A winning team was chosen and their product idea is to be presented to the product development team at Unilever and if it is agreed that there is a genuine market for this idea the students will be invited to the Unilever Ice-cream factory to see a prototype of their product being made and a mock up of the advertising campaign.

MUSIC
Music Department Summer Prom Concert 2009

Some changes took place to the look, feel and timing of our three main music concerts this year, culminating in a rousing celebration:
At Christmas, a concert involving the massed forces of the orchestra, wind bands and smaller ensembles, largely performing items with a seasonal flavour, took place in the Main hall. We were delighted that the musical performances were punctuated by some wonderfully presented short plays by the drama department. This format allowed us to involve a larger number of students than had previously been possible when we mounted Christmas Carol Concerts at local churches.

The event which had previously been known as the Summer Cabaret moved to the spring but kept its much-loved format of showcasing the various music groups in the first half and then becoming something akin to a jazz club in the second half, as the jazz band played a set of pieces while the ‘patrons’ ate, drank and talked at tables.

This paved the way for an evening which may already have become legendary (!) – the Summer Prom concert. The evening anticipated one of the great British traditions of the summer – the Last Night of the Proms (which this year will be on Saturday 12th September). Solo performances were given by students from across the school – particular highlights being James Cook’s (Yr 7) performance of Hotel California, Jo Greenwood’s (Yr 13) rendition of The Acrobat on trombone, and two original compositions for piano by James Richardson (Yr 8).

Everyone joined in with sung renditions of Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia (accompanied by much waving of Union Jack flags, and with a spectacular solo by our visiting singing teacher, Ms Whittaker). However, the true high points of the evening were those pieces where the audience were required to participate in the musical items with their party blowers! The Mexican Hat dance, performed by the Year 7 Band and audience, may well become a tradition of its own, whilst the Sailor’s Hornpipe had everyone bobbing up and down trying hard to keep up with the band on stage!

We also bid a fond farewell to two of our Music team, Mr Morren and Ms Lewis as they leave us to take up promoted posts elsewhere. They have been an inspiration to music students at Therfield School for five years and played key roles in helping to make the department the uniquely energetic, forward-looking and high-achieving one that it is today. They will both be sorely missed by students and colleagues alike, but they leave us with our sincerest best wishes and profound gratitude for all that they have done.

Year 11 Ball Burford Bridge Hotel, Dorking
25th June 2009
To help organise this event we recruited yr 11 students and created a ball committee who were key to many decisions made such as venue choice, colour schemes and other features through the night. The Ball Committee: Sienna Marseilles, Katherine Evans, Nicole Davis, Jade Orde, Hannah Chalis, Rachel Ball, Emily Barrett Miss Warman and Mrs Woodroffe led the organisation of the committee and the event itself.

Features of the ball:
The arrival of students: rather than arriving in your average limo we had students turning up in vehicles such as bright red Cadillac, the sheriff and race car from the Dukes of Hazard, Harley Davidson motor bike, Vintage Bus. The arrivals were fantastic and highly original.

The venue itself was stunning with wooden beams and a beautiful garden to enjoy to the weather. The staff were incredibly friendly and extremely helpful throughout the night.

We had 2 security staff hired from Valient Security (based in Wandsworth) who were extremely professional and helpful on the night. Kelly Bright runs a business known as Party Parcels and was able to arrange the balloons and table decorations at a great rate (which included real swarosky crystals). The colour scheme decided by the ball committee was Black and White which looked really effective on the night.

A couple of yr12 media studies students filmed the whole event to create a DVD that students can buy as a memory of the event and so we set up a yr11 Diary room so students could leave messages for the students and staff. A great way to say final goodbyes!

Hot Chocolates, the chocolate fountain company were mobbed by the yr11’s and teachers as they served marshmallows, profiteroles, gingerbread men, strawberries dipped in a 4 tier chocolate fountain! Very Yummy!!

Breeze Photography lead a Professional photo shoot where all students were able to get their group and couple shots. Steve Thornton led the session and was fantastic at getting great shots of our students. Steve had a Professional printer at the venue so students were able to buy photos and take them home on the night. Alternatively students can now access the web site for additional orders.

House Day & Prizegiving
Friday 10th July saw Therfield students involved in their annual House Day. This year, different subject areas organised team challenges with students working in mixed age groups representing each house. Older students were responsible for identifying the strengths of the team, allocating different tasks and keeping a close watch on time.

Presenting took place and House teams competed to win the House day trophy and to boost their overall house points for this academic year. We were delighted to welcome Howard Ebison, one of our ex-students, back to Therfield for the morning. He led the challenges in the Maths Department, setting students an Apprentice style task and inspiring them with words of wisdom from his experience on the television. The students were clearly star struck.
Mrs K Carriett - Deputy Headteacher

Some of the events for the day included:
Armageddon – A Brave New World (Students designed a whole new society with no discrimination, on the grounds of race, gender or disability)
A Silent Movie – Art, Drama and Music came together to put on their productions Orienteering/ mapping and treasure hunts
Performance poetry – (students created their own performance poem, with some work on Eminem and Benjamin Zephaniah for inspiration beforehand.)
Maths held The Apprentice – students were to create a sandwich involving creating the product, calculating the costs and margins – deal with the healthy school ethos, reduce packaging, and the marketing of the product.
The Light-o-Matic – DT & Science produced a Wallace & Grommet style invention

Howard also attended the Junior School Prizegiving as the guest speaker. Several of the guests commented afterwards that his speech was really excellent, motivational and inspiring. Howard directed his speech at the students which is what the evening is all about and it was very much appreciated. He also impressed the students by talking to them and signing autographs at the end of the evening.

PE & Sport

PE & Sport Faculty Review of the Year
We have had another extremely busy and extremely successful year in the PE & Sport Faculty, with many aspects to celebrate as a team and as a School; with Inter and Intra School Competition, Awards Evenings, Exam Group Work, Leadership Development and a Fantastic Sports Day as a wonderful finale.

Competitions
The PE & Sport Faculty kicked off their year early in September, with the start of a range of friendly and competitive matches against other local and not so local schools, in a range of major games and activities including football, netball, rugby, basketball, cross-country, badminton, cricket, rounders and athletics. Therfield again scored a number of victories in all of these competitions throughout the year, with many teams proving to have a very good success rate. Both the Year 11 rugby and rounders teams finished the year undefeated in local competition, the Year 9 and Senior Boys football teams both had successful runs in their respective Cup Competitions and the Girls Under 18 Squad again achieved success on a National Level; however this year, the girls team were defeated in the quarter final of the National Cup. The Senior Girls Badminton Team once again became County Champions; but despite winning 4 of their 5 matches at the Regional Championships, failed to reach the National Finals by 2 points in a game which finished 21-19. The Key Stage 3 basketball squad have benefited from weekly coaching by club coaches from Mole Valley Phoenix and a new club link with Ashtead Squash Club, has allowed for a small number of students to develop a growing interest in squash.

New for this year, was the first County Rowing Competition, which was very supported by Therfield with 24 students taking part and in their event, won by the Senior Girls Team of Nicky Grant, Alicia Harries, Harriet Forsyth and Holly Stead; it is hoped all the above success can be continued and extended next year!

Central Surrey Districts
The two Annual Central Surrey District Athletics completions were again well supported by Therfield and good success was gained in both, with almost 50 athletes running and Georgina Bland and Glen Walker both placing second and third in the Intermediate Girls and Year 7 Boys events respectively. The Summer District Athletics meeting in May was again a day full of individual successes on what proved to be a rare sunny competition. Therfield took over 50 athletes who each deserved praise for their efforts; but a few students stand out for special praise. Wilson Juma and Josh Corrigan achieved an almost unprecedented 1st and 2nd place in the Intermediate Boys High Jump Competition, with Wilson clearing an outstanding 1.80m to gain gold, with both subsequently being selected to represent Central Surrey at the Surrey Championships. Here, Wilson claimed a new Personal Best of 1.81m to win the title of Surrey Champion and has since gone on to claim a third place at the South East Regional Championships in Southampton. At the Central Surrey’s, Abi Jones, Georgina Bland and Wilson Juma claimed second place in the triple jump, 1,500m and long jump respectively; with Georgina going on to run at the Surrey Championships. Josh Corrigan and Ollie Baptise-Wilson both claimed 3rd place in the javelin and 200m in their respective age groups, with Ollie also running well at the Surrey Championships too. All deserve real praise and it can only be hoped a similar success may be gained next year.

Inter-House Super Cup Results
As a Faculty, the House System has been a tremendous success in PE & Sport, with a total of almost 47% of all students taking part in at least once Inter-House competition across the year, all gaining points for their House Totals towards the Inter-House Super Cup Trophy. Although each House individually achieved success in each of the eight sports competed in, there was a fantastic competition throughout the year between both Polesden and Norbury, with the final trophy destination only being decided on the final event of the year. Special congratulations go to ALL the Tutor Groups who have accumulated points throughout the year; and of course, to the winning House Team of NORBURY, who claimed a rightful victory after a comprehensive team effort all year. Miss Nicholls is an extremely happy Head of House and is already keenly looking forward to defending the title in 2009/2010.

The Inter-House Competitions have been a phenomenal success over the last two years, and as a Faculty we are very proud of the way in which all of our students have embraced the House System in PE & Sport; the individual Houses are developing a real sense of rivalry and this only bodes well for the future.

Leadership Development
The major focus upon Leadership at Therfield School has again continued to make a really positive impact upon our student’s development, with an extended range of activities being offered and explored. 24% of all our students are now registered as being involved with Sport Leadership either at Therfield, or in our local community. This year, all our Year 7’s completed the “Young Sports Leaders Award” as part of the Learning to Learn Programme, all gaining a certificate from Sports Leaders UK and the basic knowledge and understanding related to leading sporting activities. Another 32 Year 8 students completed a weekend of Leadership Development Work on Year 8 Camp in Hertfordshire in May; all had a wonderful time and all felt they had personally improved in a range of factors such as organisation, teamwork and communication skills.

The Sports Leaders UK Qualifications at Key Stage 5 continue to allow our older students to contribute to both the School and the local community. BTEC Students at both Year 12 and Year 13 have worked throughout the year to complete their “Community Sports Leaders Award” and “Higher Sports Leaders Award” respectively. Each requires those involved to give voluntary hours in community groups; this year our Year 13 students again spend time at Woodlands School, helping to coordinate their Boccia Competitions. Each Year 13 has identified this one experience as being not only rewarding, but personally developing and an experience which stood out as the singularly most significant aspect of their course.

In July, we launched our first ever “Leadership Academy” for Gifted and Talented Year 11 Sports Leaders; a coordinated programme of Leadership Development work which has already allowed our 12 students to complete their Community Sports Leaders Award, a first aid qualification, a Rounders Preliminary Umpiring Award and a Rounders Assistant Coaching Certificate. Along with achieving these awards, the group of Year 11’s spent time working with students in Year 7 and they independently lead all of the Year 6 Induction Programme for PE & Sport, where we completed an Olympic Project with the new cohort, based upon the Olympic Motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” Together, the Year 12 and Year 13 Leaders arranged, organised and lead a Year 5 Sports Festival for 120 Year 5 Students on the Therfield School Field as a finale of their tremendous hard work.

The Year 5’s had a wonderful time and are already looking forward to making the move to Therfield in the future. We as a Faculty are looking forward to working with the “Leadership Academy” Students and hope they can be a welcome addition to the work of the Faculty!

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award continues to go from strength to strength and this year, we have been forced to move our Expedition locations, due to the number of students involved. 18% of all of those eligible to take up the opportunity to complete the DofE Award have done so this year, a fantastic testament to the students and staff involved; and a phenomenal support to the many Community Programmes with whom our students volunteer. A lead team of Miss Rennie, Mrs Pickett and Mr Bates have combined this year to help the programme improve. A record breaking 80+ Year 9’s have undertaken their Bronze Training Camp and Practice Expedition, completing the Expedition last weekend, in torrential overnight rain. The Silver team again completed their Practice Expedition in the New Forest and for the first time, their Qualifying Expedition in the Ashdown Forest. Both proved challenging but were deemed to be a huge successes.

Having started Therfield’s first Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with 4 students in 2005, this years cohort of 24 Year 12 and 13 students were lead by Mrs Pickett in the beautiful Welsh countryside, where all those involved were able to master the largest challenges if their experience; great practice for the girls who have gone on to be involved in the World Challenge Expedition this month, lead by Mr Williams and Miss Haigh, in Nepal! Again, an outstandingly successful year and we anticipate another action packed year ahead.

PE & Sport Faculty Awards Evening
In April, the Faculty staged our first ever “PE & Sport Faculty Awards Evening,” where 211 awards were presented to 186 different students, in a range of award categories including all levels of our Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, Commitment to School Sport Awards, Year 11 Recognition Awards, Leadership Awards, Sports Personality of the Year Awards and International Achievement Awards. Special recognition is extended to our 10 Sports Personalities: Year 7 Lydia Stead and Jake Gill, Year 8 Alice Payne and Luke Adams, Year 9 Holly Stead and Rory Hogan, Year 10 Molly Cowley and David Andrews and Year 11 Georgina Bland and Laurence Bolton.

As part our Awards Evening, we were able to bid farewell and good luck to 9 Year 13 students who have gained International Recognition throughout their time at Therfield.

Georgina Giddings, Emily Morphitits, Beth Richardson, Shelby Hills and Jodie Jacobs all gained International Caps in Football; Nick Butcher represented England in Los Angeles playing Rugby 7’s, Phoebe Ayres as the Great Britain Under 18 K1 1,000m Champion and Gareth Thomas as one of Britain’s brightest and best Young Epée Fencers; in April he had reached the position of Highest British Ranked U20 Epéeist in the World, placing 3rd in Team Epée & Foil at the Junior Commonwealth Championships and placed 8th in the Final of the Lisbon World Cup. All are exceptional young athletes who go on to their future careers with every good wish imaginable from a very proud Faculty Team of Staff.

GCSE Revision Work
Examination PE continues to grow within the Faculty and this year we again staged our “Year 11 Easter Revision Booster Day” during the Easter Holiday, when 28 Year 11’s spent all day in School with Miss Rennie revising the exam specification and spending time making the theory come to life in practical settings. The PE Exam was held on the morning of 14th May, where 31 students got up very early to spend an hour with Miss Holmes, Miss Rennie and a lot of croissants and fruit juice, to compete an hour of exam question revision just before the exam. We hope that all our students had a very successful day!

Whole School Sports Day
The culmination of an extremely successful year came in the form of “Whole School Sports Day” on Friday 3rd July, where a marvellous day was experienced by all, full of real sporting rivalry and a great team effort by the PE & Sport Faculty, supported extensively by the Whole Staff Team.

On the day, there were many individual stand out moments, not least the fantastic competition between the athletes, the superb support generated by all the spectators and the general atmosphere was identified by so many as being such a positive reflection upon all of our students.

On the day, many year groups proved to be engaged in great rivalry, but as the final results came into the score team, it became apparent that POLESDEN had scored an exceptional victory and proved for the second year running, they were the force to be reckoned with on the athletics field. A huge well done is extended to ALL those involved!

Well Done to all our performers for a first-rate Sporting Year in the PE & Sport Faculty!...

Good Bye and Thank You…
As a Faculty, we bid a thankful goodbye to two members of staff this summer; Mr Hill, who leaves Therfield to re-locate to the Suffolk Countryside after 28 outstanding years in the Faculty, and Mr Williams who after three years leaves us for a new life teaching in an International School in China! Both will be missed immensely, but go with our good wishes for a very happy and successful future.

And finally, it was with the greatest of sadness, that we received the news in January, of the sad death of James Skeens, our 29 year old Rugby Development Coach, who had worked with Therfield and our Family of Schools since 2005. James had worked with many of our students through his County Rugby work and with direct links into our Gifted and Talented Programmes. James was an outstanding gentleman, role model and representative for his sport and will be sadly missed as a colleague and as a friend.

In 2009/2010, we look forward to another fantastic year, with new Curriculum developments across all Key Stages, new Qualifications being offered at Key Stage 4 and 5, new cross-curricular links and leadership work with other Faculties, developments in facilities and resources for all year groups, a new County Competition Framework to develop performance pathways in many sports and new extra-curricular clubs to include a swimming link, fitness work and Dodgeball Challenges! We will continue the hugely successful Inter-House Competitions and aim to continue developments with Local Club Links.

As Head of Faculty, I extend my sincerest of thanks to all the Faculty staff for the past year of dedicated work and wish everyone a very happy and restful summer break!
Many thanks, Miss Rennie

Whole School Sports Day 2009

National Sports Week
This fell during the peak of the heat wave, so we had to be careful about the exertion levels of students, but we did manage some additional activities. Some of the highlights are listed below:
27 students attended a Gifted and Talented workshop for cricket with our ‘Chance to Shine’ coach James Cameron.
30 Year 7 students attended a Nutrition ‘Personal Best’ workshop where they discussed balanced diets, energy intake/expenditure and what foods could give them more energy, food labelling and some healthy snack tasting!
At lunch students took part in Boxercise, Basketball, Football, Judo, Dance and Tennis workshops run by our Community link coaches Some brave representatives from tutor groups completed the ‘Superstars’ fitness challenge
All students were given the opportunity to complete a ‘Sporting pledge’ for the week to challenge themselves, compete against others, gain house points and represent their tutor group. For the launch of Healthy Schools, activities related to health and wellbeing were completed during tutor time.
Additional information regarding Healthy Schools and opportunities for extended sports coaching will be available in the new academic year.

Summer Camps
Two sports camps run by coaches that work in partnership with Therfield are available over the holidays:
