Leatherhead War Memorials - St John's School

The School War Memorial

Remember, you who remain,
those men who left this school,
in no way disgraced its learning
and died gloriously on our behalf,
obtaining eternal glory for themselves.

Two impressive ceremonies took place on Saturday afternoon, June 19th, 1920. The first was the dedication of a floor Cross in the Chancel of the Chapel, and the second the unveiling of a Cross in the Inner Quadrangle. Both Crosses were in memory of the One Hundred and Fifty Old Boys of the School who were killed on War Service.

The Cross in the Chapel was dedicated by the Bishop of Buckingham. This Cross is of brass with a border of brass on the Chancel floor, and the inscription: Our glorious Dead, 1914-1919. All live unto Him.

The Cross in the Inner Quadrangle was unveiled by Major HH Gordon-Clark, High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant, who acted in place of Admiral Jellicoe, who was unable to be present owing to illness. This Cross is in Portland Stone, of simple design, and bears the following inscription in Latin: Mementote vos superstites eorum qui ex hac schola progressi disciplina eius minime dedecorata gloriose pro nobis mortui gloriam sibi sempiternam asciverunt, MCMXIV-MCMXIX.

The Guard of Honour was supplied by the School Officers' Training Corps, and buglers sounded the "Last Post".
