March 2006

On 8 March LeDFAS members enjoyed their 100th lecture since the Society’s foundation in 1997 with Hilary Williams lecturing on Rembrandt: Family, Faces and Friends. The subject recognized another anniversary, that of Rembrandt’s birth in 1606.

Hilary Williams is Art History Education Officer at the British Museum and lectures for the Museum, the London Borough of Bexley, and the Wallace Collection. She also guides special interest tours at Buckingham Palace. In her lecture she looked at the circles of Rembrandt’s patronage and his choice of subjects, affording us a wonderful window on the world of the vibrant city of Amsterdam and its society, during its Golden Age.

For those members who are travelling on the Society’s tour to the Netherlands in April, this provided an excellent appetizer for the exhibition of Rembrandt’s work, which is one major feature of the itinerary.

After the lecture members enjoyed some bubbly and cakes to celebrate reaching the landmark of 100 lectures.

On the same evening the Society received and celebrated the Church Record of St Mary and St Nicholas, Leatherhead, which had been completed by our Church Recording Group after 5 years of diligent research and documentation. There is more on this on the Church Recorders page of this website.

September 2005
Encouraged by the positive response to last October's presentation as part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival, Leatherhead DFAS are planning another for this autumn. Entitled Pearls for ‘earing, it will be a musical evening celebrating the paintings of Vermeer.

Musician and established NADFAS lecturer, Peter Medhurst, together with singers and instrumentalists from the Classical Music Company, will be performing music to which Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ might have listened and will play replicas of the instruments that appear in Vermeer's paintings. The lecture is being promoted in association with The Leatherhead Theatre on Friday 14 October at 7.30 pm – all tickets cost £8.50 and can be obtained from the Leatherhead Theatre Box Office on 01372 365141 (open Tues – Sat 2 - 7 pm).

Leatherhead Decorative & Fine Arts Society (LeDFAS) is celebrating winning the NADFAS Digital Award 2002. In the previous year’s competition the Society were delighted to achieve a Very Highly Commended Certificate. In announcing the Award for the Society’s website - www.ledfas.org.uk - John Pagella, chairman of LeDFAS told members that coming first this time was a real triumph of enthusiasm, commitment and professionalism.

He paid particular tribute to Frank Haslam, who built and maintains the site, for ensuring that it achieves very effectively the basic objectives of publicising the Society and keeping members informed about the programme of lectures and events. He also thanked the founder Chairman June Robinson for initiating the idea of the website and Michael Chapman and the members of the committee for ensuring that the content was frequently updated. The latest additions are a report on the visit to Berlin in May by members of the Society and links to the East Surrey NADFAS Area programmes.
