MOLE VALLEY ARTS ALIVE FESTIVAL
A Spaniard in the Works
The Theatre Leatherhead - 15
October 2004
The National Chairman Nesta Waine and Katy and James from the Education Department at NADFAS House came to see the Leatherhead DFAS contribution to the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival in October. Bridget Lewis, the Chairman of Mole Valley District Council said it was lovely to see the Leatherhead Theatre buzzing again with the auditorium full of supporters of the arts from all over Surrey - from A Level students upwards.
NADFAS lecturer, Sarah Lenton, her company of actors and the talented young classical guitarist, Morgan Szymanski, presented A Spaniard in the Works to answer the question "Why did Spain give such inspiration to the artists and writers of Northern Europe?"
With vignettes from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Philip II from von Schiller's Don Carlos, George Borrow meets an Inquisitor from The Bible in Spain and Prison from the novella, Carmen by Prosper Mériméé to Georges Feydeau's A Flea in her Ear - the evening raced along interspersed with slides of paintings by Goya and Velázquez and Morgan's haunting guitar. A fascinating lecture indeed!
