News about Pilgrim Players & Singers

6 June 2003 Newsletter

Dear Friend

It’s summertime – that means PPS have chosen to perform a concert!

THE WORLD IS MY PARISH – 20 and 21 June 2003, 7.30pm For anyone who may not have heard about this concert, it is in celebration of the tercentenary of Charles Wesley’s birth. One of his most famous sayings was ‘All the World is my Parish’, meaning that his preaching was not confined to one Church or location. This concert has been devised by Ian Howarth, who attended a conference in Geneva last year which gave him over 100 pieces of praise music from across the world – so we are singing several of those (many in original languages!); by Daphne Lander, whose idea it was to put together something for Wesley’s anniversary; and by Rhys and Rhonda Frost – Rhys has written much of the dialogue. We are also delighted and challenged to have been given a new piece by David Oliver One Universal Love which will be performed by us for the first time.

The performances will be on Friday 20 June in Leatherhead Methodist Church and on Saturday 21 June in Bookham Baptist Church, Lower Road, Bookham, both starting at 7.30pm.

No tickets are necessary, but there will be retiring collections in aid of Vidas Renovados (the Methodist Church project for HIV/Aids in Southern Africa). Please support us in this extremely worthy cause and bring your friends.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY/EMAIL ADDRESSES Sue Huxtable has very kindly offered to be Membership Secretary. Dear Friend

MUSIC FOR A SUMMER EVENING
Thank you so much for your support of this event. We were delighted that, after expenses, we were able to send £200 to each of our chosen charities - Leatherhead Night Hostel and NCH.

AGM
Many thanks as ever to Joy for the use of her house and garden for our AGM. We were pleased that so many of you were able to attend.

SONGS OF PRAISE
Songs of Praise at The Theatre on Sunday 21st July was very exciting - PPS performed 3 of the concert pieces, which went down well. The rest of the music was put together and led by David Oliver.

CAROL CONCERT
You will probably remember that we have been invited to join the Salvation Army Band in the Dovecote Carol Concert. Ian Howarth will be Musical Director and David Lander will accompany us. Rehearsals start on 10 October at 7.30pm at the Methodist Church in Church Road Leatherhead and the concert will be in the new Catholic Church in Epsom (behind the 'Haywain', where the convent used to be) on Thursday 19th December.

EMAIL ADDRESSES
I have had a few email addresses, but not nearly as many as I should have, I am sure. Please email me with your address and the next newsletter can arrive in a more modern fashion! My email address is janefhaslamAThotmail.com (replace AT with @ before sending).

ACCOMMODATION REQUIRED
There is the possibility that a South African choir will tour in the UK next June/July (2003). Should they come, they will need accommodation. At present we do not know what this would involve, but Ian (Howarth) wondered if PPS could help. Please speak to Jane if you would be interested in helping. As and when we have further details, I shall let you know.

HERE AND NOW
Rob Frost is touring a new show throughout the country, called Here and Now. As ever, he needs a choir for the performance on 22 October in Guildford Civic Hall. Please talk to Ian Howarth urgently if you wish to join in, as the first rehearsal is on Sunday afternoon 29 September (sorry about short/late notice).

BRIAN AND SHEENA
Daphne and David and Jane and Frank were invited as representatives of PPS to join Brian and Sheena Treharne (URC Minister and wife) for their Retirement party at the URC on 28 September. We have just returned from the very enjoyable party, where we were royally entertained. In his speech Brian referred to the work of PPS and how he and Sheena had enjoyed joining in with our events. We gave them a card from us all and we wish them every happiness in their retirement in Cranleigh.

PLAY READINGS AND FUTURE PRODUCTIONS
We wondered at our last committee meeting if anyone would like to start play readings again. We always had a hilarious evening, and found some real treasures. We are looking very carefully at what we might do in 2003 - if you have any suggestions, please contact any of the Committee - Daphne, Joy, Jane, Bernard, Sue Huxtable, Ann Styche, Rhonda, Margaret Eckersley, Sue Bond. We are an open committee and anyone is welcome to join us at any time.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY (please note them carefully!):
10 October Rehearsals start for Carol Concert
Thursday 19 December Dovecote Carol Concert

Very best wishes - & we look forward to seeing you soon

Jane Haslam (Daphne is currently on sabbatical, but hopes to join us again in November)
